`Seidman and the. Geisha,' Another Entertaining Novel by Erick Moll

Those who have read and re-
member "Seidman and Sons"
will at once become intrigued
by the follow-up novel by Erick
Moll, "Mr. Seidman and the
Geisha," published by Simon
and Schuster.
The first Seidman was an
hilarious novel. The second is
equally, if not more, intriguing.

ments, had been away, with his
wife, on a three-month trip that
included Israel and other coun-
tries. His real excitement was
created.by Japan, where he was
introduced to a new way of life,
where he had the joy of being
in the company of a geisha girl
who turned out to be a very
human being.
He, in turn, won her admira-
tion and affections as a very
sweet man who was kind and
also funny. And while sex may
be awaited it turns out to be a
very wholesome story.
There are many funny inci-
dents. His association with the
Japanese cloth dealer, the calm-
ness of the Japanese as con-
trasted with Seidman's infre-
quent loss of -patience, the man-
ner in which he shows his filial
affections for his wife — these
provide humor, dispel intrigue,
offer elements of adventure in a
placid story.

what he learned after being in
Japan caused him to wonder
how such an idea got around
altogether. And he likens the
rumor to the charge that Eisen-
hower was a Communist, that
every Jew is a Shylock, that all
Negroes are rapists.
Then follows the detailed ac-
count of an experience with a
geisha who was such a charming
girl. Both got along well—he
after telling her he was not only
an American but also a Jew;
she relating how she was placed
into a school for geishas as a
youngster by her mother and
how she had secured employ-
ment with the merchant who
now assigned her to Seidman to
entertain him during his Japa-
nese stay. Seidman told her
about his 18-year-old daughter
and he expressed the hope that
the two would meet, and then
he realized that the girl who
was entertaining him was her-
self that age—and he began to
feel pangs over the humiliation
he was causing.
The concluding wholesome-
ness of the story, the love Seid-
man showers upon his wife
Sophie and the charm of the
narrative once again enhance
Erick Moll's status as an enter-
taining writer.

PASSOVER. GREETINGS

know what this is. Well, I'll ex-
plain it to you. Take beaver
hats. This was once a very big
business in this country, they
sold them- everywhere, Europe,
all over. Astor made a fortune.
So say this Ruditzky hears that
beaver hats are all of a sudden
out of style, a drag on the mar-
ket, the whole industry is col-
lapsing. It actually happened
like this, overnight. So he buys
up a couple of shiploads of
beaver hats for a song and he
finds a market, in Lapland for
instance. But he can't get money
there because they haven't got
money. But reindeers they've
got. So he takes for the beaver
hats four shiploads of reindeer
meat and this he sells to a com-
pany in the Fiji Islands, they
haven't got meat but they've got
cobra and whales. He gets for
the reindeers three shiploads of
copra and three dried blubber,
what's left after they cook out
the oil from the whales. The
copra he puts in a warehouse
for next year's draydle, and the
blubber he sells to a farmers'
collective in Peoria, Illinois, it's
very good for fertilizer. But
again he doesn't take money, he
takes wheat. Not wheat what
they have now in the granary
but what they'll grow later,
from the fertilizer. And this he
sells, futures, on the Johannes-
burg Commodity Market and he
takes instead of money, shares
in the African Development
Company which five years later
are worth five million dollars.
This is draydle."
That's how the story goes on
—in this humorous, often satiri-
cal vein. It is not a vile ap-
proach, as some might interpret
a draydle as it applies to Jews.
It has a Sholem Aleichem tinge,
it dissects the minds of a cast of
characters that happens to be
Jewish.
