Israel's press now celebrates
its 100th anniversary.
One morning in 1863 placards
appeared on the walls of Jeru-
salem heralding the publication
of Palestine's first Hebrew
newspaper—The Lebanon. The
masthead of the new paper was
carried in three languages —
Hebrew, Arabic and Latin. Be-
low it ran a legend in arresting
black type which rivaled the
scope if not the terseness of
present-day journalistic slogans.
It read: "Heralding the peace
of Jerusalem, giving the news
of the Holy Land in general, re-
porting the unknown from the
lands of Syria, Yemen and In-
dia and the teachings of those
sitting before God in the Holy
Land—everything that a man
of Israel is desirous of know-
ing."
Evidently, the Turkish au-
thorities had different ideas

on what a man of Israel
should know for, after only
12 issues, they forced The
Lebanon to close. Undeterred,
one of its editors — Rabbi
Yechiel Brill — moved to
Paris where he continued to
bring out the paper for 14
more years.
A year after The Lebanon
closed, Yoel Moshe Salomon,
another of the original group of
editors, brought out a magazine.
Judea and Jerusalem, and at
the same time a second news-
paper, Havatzelet, was pub-
lished by I. F. Frumkin.
Obstacles from the Turkish
administration constantly had to
be overcome. But many other
problems arose, not the least of
which was the oppostion of the
old Jewish community. in Jeru-
salem to whom Hebrew was a
sacred tongue which should be
used only for studying the Holy
Scriptures.
An outstanding pioneer in the
revival of the Hebrew language
was Eliezer Ben Yehuda who
for over 33 years published a
variety of newspapers and mag-
azines. As the Turks shut down
his papers, he would change
their names and reappear. Once
he was sentenced to a year's
imprisonment. Another time his
papers were "excommunicated"
by extreme religous elements.
It was Ben Yehuda who first
brought out a daily Hebrew
newspaper in Palestine—Hazvi.
He was also the first to publish
a technical journal, "The Jew-
ish Farmer," and he was the
first to introduce cable service
to the Hebrew press in 1898.
Sometimes, publication was
impeded by difficulties of an-
other sort. One issue of Hazvi
carried this "Editor's note:"
"The next issue of Hazvi will
not be published on time as
the editor, for a very impor-
tant reason, had to leave sud-
denly for Jaffa. By the will
of God, it will appear again
on Sunday or Monday . . ."
Modest as the beginnings of
the Hebrew press were, they
contributed much toward the
enrichment of modern Hebrew
and moreover they helped
awaken the small Jewish com-
munity in Palestine to the prob-
lems of the Yishuv and created
a new interest in the problems
of the Jewish communities out-
side of Palestine. .Indeed, al-
ready in their early stage, these
papers were publishing special
supplements in Yiddish and La-
dino (Spanish jargon).
In 1918, toward the close of
World War I, General Head-
quarters of the British occupa-
tion forces published in Cairo
a daily in English, Hebrew and
Arabic, called "News from the
Holy Land." This was the fore-
runner of the modern Hebrew
paper, Haaretz—and with it be-
gan the development of the He-
brew press as it exists today—
a press that can stand compari-
son with any in the world.
There are now 11 Hebrew
dailes published in Israel, be-
sides one English daily (Jerusa-
lem Post) and a large number
of other foreign-language dailies
published for the benefit of the
new immigrants; besides nume-
rous trade papers, weeklies, and
magazines covering all fields of
interest.
