4,000 Synagogues
Reported in Israel

JERUSALEM, (JTA) — There
are more than 4,000 synagogues
in Israel today compared with
only 800 at the time of the estab-
lishment of the State in 1948,
and 500 others are under con-
struction, it was reported by Re-
ligious Affairs Minister Zorach
Warhaftig during the presenta-
tion to the Knesset of his Minis-
try's 1963-64 budget: The fig-
ures, he noted, did not include
an additional 250 youth syna-
gogues.
During the coming year, some
750,000 pounds ($250,000) has
been allocated for synagogues
from government funds and other
sources including the Jewish
Restitution Successor Organiza-
tion, the Silverman Trust and
Heichal Shlomo, the Supreme
Religious Center. Eight new
synagogues are also being estab-
lished in development towns by
means of a grant of 750,000
pounds from Sir Isaac Wolfson,
prominent British philanthropist.

Rabbis Perform Matzo
Shmuroh at Goodman's

In the traditional ceremony
which is a part of the pre-Pass-
over preparations, a representa-
tion of renowned rabbis gath-
ered at the A. Goodman & Sons,
Inc., bakery in Long Island City
to participate in the annual bak-
ing, according to the prescribed
manner, of their own Passover
matzos, the Shmuroh Matzos.
No hand touched the ingredi-
ents, or the mixture, from the
very pouring of the flour from
the special bags through the end-
less belt lines that carried them
to perfect baking then to the
weighing and packing lines. Ac-
cording to the age-old laws, the
entire process of the matzo bak-
ing must be completed within
18 minutes.
The group was accompanied
through the ceremony and oper-
ation by Mel Golbert, General
Sales Manager of the company,
and Richard Cohn, son of Erich
Cohn, president of Goodman.
The company produces a va-
riety of matzos and matzo prod-
ucts, all strictly Kosher for Pass-
over, as well as for year-round
use. These include the square
matzos, the round tea matzos,
egg matzos and matzo meal and
matzo farfel, among other items.

Israel Wins Medal

The medal was handed by
President Ydigoras to Joshua
Shai, the Israel Ambassador.
Some 500,000 persons visited
the Israel stand which was also
visited by officials of major
Guatemalan firms and directors
of the Chamber of Commerce.
The business visitors, express-
ing admiration for the exam-
ples of Israel industrial ability,
expressed belief that this would
lead to greater trade between
the two countries.

A

PASSOVER

MESSAGE

Moe Leiter

Once again we have arrived at the time of the Passover, that most
ancient of religious celebrations . .. important not only as a part of Judaism,
but also as a home ceremonial and as a remainder of our belief in the sanctity
of the family.

It is good to look deeply into the various meanings and significances
of such events. Perhaps to do so enables us to return to our current problems
with enriched hope and faith, rededicating ourselves to the completion of today's
tasks with fresh vigour and enthusiasm.

On this occasion we, as insurance people, do feel the inspiration to
dedicate ourselves anew to our role in contemporary life as providers of
financial support to families in times of their greatest need. And we pledge
ourselves to continue to serve our clients and friends with sincerity and stead-
fastness, helping them acquire security for their most precious treasures . .
their wives and children.

At this time also we extend to all our sincerest wishes for a happy
Passover.

A Brooklyn synagogue, the
Jewish Center of Kings High-
way, has been expelled from
the United Synagogue of Amer-

This is the first time since
the United Synagogue was or-

gation has been expelled for
this type of offense. •
The United Synagogue is the
congregational arm of the Con-
servative Movement in Juda-

gogues in the United States and
Canada and more than a million
and a half members and ad-
herents.
