MONTREAL (JTA) — The Jewish community of Canada formally rejected all political appeals that may be made dur- ing the current pre-election campaigns "based on racial or religious grounds" or designed to give the impression that Jews in the Dominion vote as a bloc. The general elections are to be held April 8. The resolution on the sub- ject was adopted unanimously at a meeting of the national Joint Community Relations Committee of the Canadian Jewish Congress and Bnai Brith. It was also approved by the na- tional executive of the Canadian Jewish Congress and by the CJC's national religious advis- ory committee. The resolution reads: "The Canadian Jewish Con- gress is of the opinion that Jew- ish citizens of this community participate in municipal, pro- vincial and national elections as citizens of Canada, sharing with citizens of all other faiths and origins a common interest in the proper and efficient ad- ministration of our country's af- fairs. It consequently rejects on principle any political appeal directed by a candidate based on racial or religious grounds, designed to give the impression that there is a bloc such as 'the Jewish vote' or any other type of ethnic or religious grouping of the electorate, and which is aimed at attracting votes by f a v o r i n g or discriminating against any group in the elec- torate." British Chief Rabbi Issues Appeal to Moscow for Matzoth LONDON (JTA) — British Chief Rabbi Israel Brodie ap- pealed to Soviet authorities "in the name of Anglo-Jewry" to permit Soviet Jews to have mat- zoth for Passover. The statement cited the an- nouncement in the Moscow Cen- tral synagogue on March 16 that, as happened in 1962, the state bakeries would not pro- vide matzoth this year. Want ads get quick results! This is the story of shrewdness, of a Jewish intellectual who resorted to all kinds of work, who began as a welder, became a plumber, fra- ternized, was patronizing, re- sorted to solicitude—in order to survive, as he did. He had been separated from his wife and child, and never heard from them again. He wit- nessed cruelties, himself suf- fered hunger, but schemed to get extra bread, occasional benefits —extra snatches of rest from hard labor—all as means of sur- vival. Hersey has made a great con- tribution to the study of tenacity, to an understanding of the will to live, with a remarkably good collection of short stories.
