Israeli Merchant
Slain in Katanga

LONDON--(JTA)—An Israeli
citizen who had been a merch-
ant in Elizabethville, capital of
the former Congolese secession-
ist province of Katanga, was
shot and killed in Elizabeth-
ville Sunday morning, accord-
ing to a radio report here.
The man, Simon Asher, 55,
was walking in front of the
former Katanga National Bank
when soldiers ordered him off
the sidewalk, the dispatch re-
ported. Asher, who was deaf,
did not hear the order,. and
was hit by a bullet which
killed him immediately. Asher,
though a citizen of Israel, was
reported to have been a store-
keeper in Elizabethville for the
last eight years. Many white
businessmen closed their stores
in protest against the shooting,
while the Jewish community
entered vigorous protests with
officials of Katanga Province
and the national Congo govern-
ment in Leopoldville.

Warsaw Ghetto Heroism, Israel's
Emergence Viewed in Field's Book

ConSiderable interest is being
shown nationally as well as lo-
cally in the new book by Detroit
industrialist Walter L. Field,
"A People's Epic," published by
Bloch.
In view of the approaching
commemoration of the Warsaw
Ghetto uprising and the 15th an-
niversary of Israel's rebirth, the
references to these two events in
Field's book are of particular
interest.

Writer Sees Water
Scheme as Possible
War Threat in M. E.

In a special article in the cur-
rent issue of Look Magazine by
Oscar Schisgall, entitled "Is-
rael's New Waterline: Will It
Bring War?" it is suggested that
a possible crisis may - erupt upon
the completion in Israel, during
the coming two months, of the
great engineering feat — the
pipeline to carry Jordan River
waters southward more than
115 miles.
Indicating that the Arabs view
this engineering project to pump
water from Lake Kinneret as
an act of aggression, Schisgall
recalls that Eric Johnston had
suggested a plan for cooperative
use of the available waters by
both Israel and the Arab states
but that the idea was vetoed by
the Arabs.
He also points out that Jordan
has been channeling Yarmuk
River waters- for - five years. "In
many areas," he writes, "farm-
ers no longer have to rely on
the Jordan. But those who do
need the Jordan's waters have
been assured by the Israeli gov-
ernment that an ample supply
would be made available to
them."
Syria is the most serious op-
ponent of Israel's water project
and, as Schisgall sees -it:- "The
issue is drawn. The Middle East
faces renewed violence—unless
world opinion intervenes and
insists that reason take the
place of conflict. Reason, as the
Arabs see it, lies in refusing
legal recognition of Israeli
rights, including water rights.
Reason,. as the Israelis see it,
lies in following an adaptation
of the Johnston plan. They re-
gard it as sound, progressive and
constructive. They maintain that
an intelligent settlement of the-
issue will bring new life, peace
and well-being to the entire
Biblical area."

Canada Party Assures
Opposition ,to Bigotry

MONTREAL, (JTA) — Robert
Thompson, national leader of the
Social Credit Party, publicly
disavowed any anti-Semitism as
a policy of his party. At an elec-
tion rally at Pembroke, Ontario,
he declared his party "firmly
opposes racial discrimination
and religious prejudice."
At the same time, he an-
nounced he had written to the
Canadian Jewish Congress, af-
firming that principle of non-
bias and asserting "I am aware
of the great contributions to
the Canadian way of life and to
progress in the entire world
made by the Jewish people of
this country."

Connecticut Jews See
Sabbath Exemption Threat
in .New Sunday Law Bill
HARTFORD, (JTA)
The
Connecticut Jewish Community
Relations Council put on record
objections to the Padula-Shea
bill, now before a legislative
committee, to change the state's
Sunday closing law.
Jerome Wagner of Bloom-
field, CRC president, told a
General Law Committee hear-
ing on the measure that Sab-
batarian exemptions in effect
in Connecticut for many years
were threatened by the bill in
its present form.
