Panel Discussion

ganization of America, will pre-

This year, for the first time.
American Cancer Society vol-
unteers will distribute no fund-
raising literature on a house-
to-house basis during the an-
nual Cancer Crusade.
The' 1963 Crusade gets under
way - April 1 and reaches its
climax with the residential
drive the evening of Monday,
April 22. April has been desig-
nated Cancer Control Monthl by
Presidential proclamation.
U.S. Representative John D.
Dingell, general Crusade chair-
man for the Southeastern Mich-
igan Division of the Society, in
announcing no fund - raising
pamphlets would be handed out,
said:
"Instead, volunteers will bring
`Your Family's Copy of Can-
cer's Seven Danger Signals,' a
leaflet especially prepared for
family use.
"In this way, more than 40,-
000,000 copies of these life-
saving facts will be distributed
door-to-door throughout the na-
tion, in the greatest educational
drive in the history of the So-
ciety."
"Some 30,000 volunteers in
Wayne, Oakland and Macomb
counties will join more than 2,-
000,000 similar volunteers in
this country in the residential
campaign.".
Dingell said that "public edu-.
cation is paying off can be seen
in the number of lives saved
— 1,200,000 cured cancer pa-
tients in the United States —
and the fact that one in three
cases is being cured today as
contrasted .with fewer than one
in five 25 years ago.
"This means that a more
alert, informed public educated
to respect cancer, but not to
fear it, is acting on the Seven
Danger Signals and getting an
annual health examination, in-
cluding rectal and colon exam-
ination and, in women, the
`Pap' smear."
The seven danger signals are:
(1) Unusual bleeding or dis-
charge; (2) a lump or thick-
ening in the breast or else-
where; (3) a sore that does not
heal; (4) change in bowel or
bladder habits; (5) hoarseness
or cough; (6) indigestion or dif-
ficulty in swallowing; (7)
change in a wart or mole.
