Break Ground for Fred Butzel Junior High

Following approval of bids
March 12 by the Detroit Board
of Education, ground-breakings
have been scheduled for two
more schools. Ceremonies
marked the beginning of the
new Fred M. Butzel Junior
High on Monday, and the new
John Owen Elementary School
on Wednesday.
Fred M. Butzel, for whom the
new junior high school is
named, was a native Detroiter,
attorney and philanthropist who
helped build the foundations of
many social and civic organiza-
tions. The Butzel Recreation
Center also was named for him
as a memorial tribute for his
contribution to the welfare of

the young people of Detroit.
The Butzel site consisting of
8.8 acres (including Van Dyke
School and playgrounds) is
bounded by Seyburn, Vernor,
Van Dyke and Kercheval. The
budget of $3,005,000 ($15.16
per square foot) covers site ac-
quisition, development, construc-
tion, equipment and furniture.
Planned in two units, the first
will have a capacity of 1,250
students and when completed
the second unit will house 1,050
additional . students.
The building will contain 12
classrooms, typing and science
rooms, library, industrial arts
shops, homemaking centers and
a central kitchen and dining-
assembly area. Completion is
scheduled for January, 1964.
