sions of the World Zionist Actions Committee, of which he is a

Recognizing the "crucial im-
portance" of United Jewish Ap-
peal-supported programs in the
rescue, resettlement and reha-
bilitation of distressed Jews
overseas, the Conference of Pres-
idents of Major American Jewish
Organizations adopted a resolu-
tion urging its member bodies
to- "assist nationally in the mean-
ingful observance" of the 25th
Anniversary of the UJA during
19613, it has been announced by
Rabbi Irving Miller, chairman of
the Conference.
Recalling the pre-World War
II years when Nazi persecution
of Jews was becoming rampant,
the resolution stated: "Born in
one of the darkest hours of
Jewish history and nurtured by
the bond of kinship which unites
every Jew with his fellow Jew,
the United Jewish Appeal repre-
sents the finest expression of the
heart and soul of American
Jewry."
The American .Tewish commu-
nity, through the UJA, has dem-
onstrated its "abiding committ-

ments to values which are the
very essence of the Jewish faith",
the resolution declared. "Ac-
cordingly American Jews gave
vast sums of money to rescue
thousands of Jews in Hitler-
dominated Europe, sustained the
life and hope of tens of thou-
sands in ghettoes, concentration
camps and hideouts, provided
more than three million Jews in
many lands with the basic neces-
sities of life, and as the crown-
ing achievement, transplanted
more than one and a half million
Jews to Israel and other demo-
cratic lands."
This record of accomplishment,
the resolution read, is a "tribute
to American Jewry, especially to
the men and women throughout
the country who by their ex-
ample inspired their communi-
ties to achieve records of giving
unsurpassed in the history of
private philanthropy. Above all
what has been achieved is a
tribute to the people of Israel
who at great personal sacrifice
kept open their doors to fellow
Jews in search of freedom and
matched the efforts of American
Jewry in absorbing newcomers."
