Commissioner Edwards, Wife Get Jack el-Silvermayi
Amity Award for Community Effort Engagement Told
A number of civic and com-
munity leaders on Wednesday
paid tribute to Detroit Police
Commissioner and Mrs. George
Edwards as recipients of the
American Jewish Congress
Women's Division 16th Annual
Amity Awards.
The Amity Award Luncheon,
attended by 250 at Adas Sha-
lom Synagogue, marked the
first time that a husband and
wife have been selected to
share the honor. Mayor Jerome
Cavanagh was on hand for the
occasion.
The Edwards' were cited for.
"dedicated service to the bet-
tering of community relations
in the State of Michigan."
The resloution marking the
choice stated, in part:
"George Edwards, Detroit's
Police Commissioner, is rooted
in the American liberal tradi-
tion . . . (deirionstrated) while
serving as director of the De-
troit Housing Commission and
during his four terms on the
Detroit Common Council (two
terms as Council president). He
served as Probate Judge in
charge of Wayne County Juve-
nile Court, Circuit Judge of the
third Judicial Circuit and Jus-
tice of the Supreme Court of
Michigan.
. . . Margaret Edwards has
been her husband's helpmate,
confidante and co-worker since
their marriage in 1939. She
managed his political cam-
paigns and helped form his de-
cision to accept the challenge
of the Police Commissionership.
As chairman of the Episcopal
Committee for Racial Unity.
Margaret Edwards is in the
forefront of efforts to realize in
the spiritual realm the same
ideals her husband fights for in
the political world."
