Abba Eban Differs with Ben-Gurion
on Compulsory Education for Teens

JERUSALEM, (JTA) — Abba
Eban, Israel's Minister of Edu-
cation, took issue in parliament
with Prime Minister Ben-Gurion
on the question of "compulsory
and free high school education"
in this country.
Eban proposed instead a pol-
icy of "free secondary education
for those who are adept and who
wish it."
Eban stated his views as he

discussed before the Knesset his
Ministry's 19.63-64 budget, call-
' ing for 200,000,000 pounds. He
described the Ben-Gurion formu-
lation on high school education
as • "both impractical and un-
necessary."
Eban's report showed that, in
the past three years, government
subsidies to high schools rose
from 9,000,000 pounds a year
($3.000,000) to 20.000,000 pounds
(about $6,700,000).

NEW YORK, (JTA) — The
Rabbinical Assembly of America,
the association of American Con-
servative Rabbis, confirmed re-
ports that the organization post-
poned the holding of a convoca-
tion scheduled for this summer
in Israel, as a protest against an
action against it by religious of-
ficials in Israel.
The organization's executive
council canceled the conference
because Jewish religious authori-
„ties in Israel refused to accept
two Jewish divorces executed by
the Rabbinical Assembly's Beth
Din (rabbinical court). The con-
ference would have been in the
form of a "kinus,” an assembly
for contacts with Israelis, rather
than a convention, and it would
have been the first Conservative
"kinus" in Israel.
The executive council took the
action after a protest to the Is-
rael Ministry for Religions failed
to elicit a satisfactory reply, a
spokesman said. He added that
negotiations were continuing be-
tween the Rabbinical Assembly
and officials in Israel in an ef-
fort to settle the dispute so that
the "kinus" could be. scheduled
for 1964. It was to have been
held in June or July of this
year originally, the spokesman
said.

Blue-White Box clearance will
begin Sunday, April 14, accord-
ing to an an-
nouncement by
Mrs. Philip
Slomovitz, chair-
man of the JNF
Blue-White Box
committee.
Beginning
with the last -
day of Hol Ha-moed Pasach,
volunteer workers, members of

of JNF, will clear the JNF
Blue-White Boxes, in some 4,500
homes. Youth groups also will
participate.
Mrs. Slomovitz stressed the
important role the Blue-White
box played, "both as a link of
the contributor with Israel, and
as one of the mediums which
led to the .establishment of the
State through the early pur-
chases of land in Palestine al-
most 60 years ago." She also
referred to the added responsi-
bilities upon the JNF as a re-
sult of the Israel Land Author-
ity which made the JNF the
only exclusive agency for Land
development and afforestation
in all of Israel.
Boxholders are asked to co-
operate and receive the volun-
teers with cordiality. Box hold-
ers may also arrange for spe-
cial clearance by calling the

REMEMBER

The memories of Passovers gone by—the search and sale of the Chometz—Grandpa
poking around the kitchen, making the horseradish and the Choraches—putting on the
new suit of clothes and shoes—pockets full of hazel nuts—and almonds—anxiously
waiting for the Seder to start—Uncle Joe and Aunt Sadie were always late—the whole
family together—Grandpa looking like a king propping the pillow on the chair beside
him—Grandma tired after baking and cooking all day but "My Malke" my queen, ho
called her—the Kiddush and then my turn for "Ma Nishtanah" and the answer giver)
with Grandpa's voice ringing out over all—the first half of the Hagadah almost ove•.'
even the bitter herbs tasted so good—Passover it was always "strong"—all were COST,*
pelled to eat it otherwise we could not get the hard boiled egg and salt water—and
then the meal—nobody, but nobody, could cook better than Grandma—we ate—and
ate and then the "Benchen"—and the rest of the Hagadah—and some more cups of
wine—and the opening of the door—and the stories of how in the old country someone
frightened the whole family by appearing at that door—but best of all the songs with
which the second half of the Hagadah abound—and the feeling of drowsiness—content-
ment—and the thought that tomorrow the same thing once more
