Bar Mitzvah Club
to Enable Youth to
Pilgrimage to Israel

A new organization has been
established to enable Jewish
youngsters to make special pil
grimages to Israel. Known as
the National Bar Mitzvah Club,
it is the first of its kind in
the United States and is head-
ed by Rabbi Harry Halpern of
the East Midwood Jewish Cen-
ter of Brooklyn.
Rabbi H alp e r n, a former
chairman of Rabbinical Assem-
bly of America,
announced that
the National
Bar Mitzvah
Club — head-
quartered at
515 Park Ave.,
ew York—is
devoted "to
making the re-
ligious cere-
monies of Bar
Mitzvah and
Bat Mitzvah
Rabbi Halpern meaningful ex-
periences through pilgrimages
to Israel." He explained that
Jewish youngsters become
eligible for membership • in the
National Bar Mitzvah Club at
the age of 13 years. Funds for
a member's trip and summer-
long stay in Israel are derived
from membership dues paid
over a three-year period. The
youngsters go to Israel when
they become 16-years-old.
Isfael's Prinie Minister David
Ben-Gurion — in a special mes-
sage hailing the establishment
of the National Bar Mitivah
Club—declared:
"I was very happy . . .
about the establishment of the
Bar Mitzvah Club in the United
States. This is a most import-
ant project for it will lead to
hundreds, perhaps thousands
of American Jewish youth
visiting Israel. Such a visit to
the Land of the Bible, in addi-
tion to their present study of
the HebreW languag e, will
strengthen the ties of every
boy and girl with the people
of Israel and the wellsprings
of our history. I sincerely hope
that every Jewish family in the
United States will register its
children. in the •Club."

Torah Peace Corps
Urged for Algerian
Refugees in France

Rabbi Avraham Hirsch, di-
rector. of P'Eylim, Jewish stu-
dent organization, recently re-
turning from a visit to the Jew-
ish Algerian communities in
France, pictured the Algerian
Jewish refugees as actually ex-
periencing spiritual starvation.
"Because of the refugees'
plight," Rabbi Hirsch stated,
"non-Jewish forces are exploit-
ing every opportunity to cap-
ture and own the innocent and
naive souls of these poverty-
stricken Algerian refugees. The
French Jewish communities are
neither economically nor spirit-
ually able to cope with the in-
tensity of the existing crisis.
Rabbi Hirsch called for a
volunteer "Torah Peace Corps"
of Young American Torah
scholars to give spiritual aid
to the refugee communities in
France.
P'Eylim headquarters are at
3' W. 16th St., New York.

Chassidic Rabbi Backs Banning
of Prayer Recitation in Schools

BOSTON, JTA)—A statement
strongly supporting last year's
U.S. Supreme Court decision
banning official prayer in the
public schools was issued here
by the Bostoner Rebbe, Rabbi
Levi I. Horowitz, spiritual lead-
er of the New England Chassidic
Center and chairman of the
commission on religious prac-
tices of the Massachusetts Coun-
cil of Rabbis.
Attacks against Jews who sup-
port the High Tribunal's ruling,
and their equation with atheists,
should not obscure the issue,
Rabbi Horowitz declared. Those
who uphold the Supreme Court's
decision, he stated, "may be
just as religious as those who
oppose it, and have the addi-
