Negro Newspaper Declares Jews Control New York's Top Positions

- NEW YORK—The New York
Amsterdam News, a leading
Negro weekly newspaper, was
severely criticized here Wednes-
day by Jewish organizations —
as well as by the Protestant
Council — for a report in its
current issue alleging that "a
highly confidential study" had
established that "Jews control
New York City's top jobs."
The Amsterdam News also as-
serted that the study demon-
strated that Jews "hold 53 per
cent of top positions" in city
government though they con-
stitute only 26.4 per cent of
the city's population.
The newspaper did not indi-
cate who conducted the "se-
cret" survey but implied that
it was done by Protestants.
Protestant leaders who read the
study told the Jewish Tele-
graphic Agency that the news-
paper "twisted" the data and
gave it a distorted interpre-
tation. The Urban League of
Greater New York, a Negro
organization, also criticized the
Amsterdam News report.
The Amsterdam News re-
ported that the survey had
"far reaching racial implica-
tions" since it had been in-
dicated that about 85 per
cent of the city's Protestants
are Negroes. According to
the Amsterdam News version,
One of the survey's conclu-
sions was that "Jews tend to
get jobs far in excess of their
percentage of the population"
and that Jews "are over-
represented in 31 categories
and underrepresented in five
categories" in city positions.

ANKARA, (JTA) — A new
agreement on a mutual program
of cooperation between the two
bodies was signed here by Zeev
Levine, international relations
director for Histadrut, and Seyfi
Demirsoy, leader of "Turk-Is,"
the Turkish Conferedation of
Labor Unions.
Under the pact, Histadrut will
conduct in 1963 a special four-
to-six-week seminar for between
15 and 20 labor leaders from this
country. Histadrut will also in-
vite a delegation of Turkish
labor leaders for a 10-day visit
to Israel. Bath sides agreed to
cooperate closely in various
international bodies, and to pro-
mote tourism for workers in
each of the countries. Histadrut
expects to direct 500 Israeli
workers next summer as tourists
in Turkey.
Levine was received formally
while on his visit to Turkey by
Minister of Labor Bulent Ecevit
and other top governmental offi-
cials, as well as by "Turk-Is"
leaders at Istanbul.
