Continuing the Council's ob-
servance of its "then and now"
25th anniversary theme, Toubin
will evaluate the effect of the
American environment on his-
toric and traditional Jewish
values, and corresponding
changes in the role and function
of the American Jewish Com-
munity.
The American Associaticn for
Jewish Education is a central
coordinating body of the Ameri-
can Jewish community con-
cerned with the improvement of
educational standards in the
Jewish school systems. It is
representative of and serves all
denominational and communal
Jewish schools.
Toubin's presentation will be
preceded by remarks by Dr.
Samuel Krohn, chairman of the
Internal Relations Committee
and Irving Pokempner, chair-
man of the Culture Commission.
Other agenda items for the
forthcoming assembly include
remarks on the 25th anniver-
sary year by Dr. Shmarya Klein-
man, past president of the
Council, a summary of Council
activities by the executive di-
rector, Walter E. Klein, and a
report of the nominating com-
mittee by Hyman Safran. A dis-
cussion period will follow after
Toubin's address.
The Detroit Women of Alpha
Omega Dental Fraternity, under
hte chairmanship of Mrs. Jack
Zander, will be hostesses at a
social hour following the assem-
bly.

Schaefer and Bagley
Hadassah Groups Will
Hear Moss, Edwards

A sociologist and police com-
missioner are slated to speak to
Detroit Chapter of Hadassah
group meetings this week at
Hadassah House.
Dr. Leonard Moss, chairman
of the Sociology and Anthro-
pology Department, Wayne
State University, will talk to
Schaefer women 8:30 p.m.
Thursday. He will discuss "Basic
Jewish Values." Mrs. Sidney
Jacobs, program vice-president
will introduce the speaker.
Mrs. Oscar Overton is in
charge of the social hour. She is
to be assisted by Mesdames Leo
Schefstein, David Cohen and
Sarah Brand. Mrs. Jerry Gold-
man, president, invites all.
George Edwards, • Detroit po-
lice commissioner, will speak to
Bagley North and South ladies
12:45 p.m. Tuesday. A dessert
luncheon will precede his pres-
entation. Edwards' topic will be
"The Challenge of '63—at Home
and Abroad."
Mrs. George Carson and Mrs.
Alfred Feiler, group presidents,
invite all.

A. Raymond Katz, who has
achieved international stature as
a religious artist and a forerun-
ner of the "new Jewish art move-
ment," will present an illus-
trated lecture Sunday at the Uni-
versity of Michigan Hillel Foun-
dation.
Part of a coast-to-coast lecture
tour, Katz spoke yesterday at the
Flint Jewish Center.
His subject Sunday will be "A
New Approach to Hebraic Sym-
bolism." The discussion is ac-
companied by a small exhibit, in
addition to the slides and black-
board drawings.
Katz's Ten Commandment
windows recently were installed
in Ishpeming.
Three of his one-man shows
will open simultaneously on Sun-
day in San Antonio, San Diego
and at the University of Mis-
souri. His works have been ex-
hibited in major museums across
the country.

ders in Tomaszow-Lubelski.

Speaks at U-M Hillel

When Nazi forces laid waste
the Jewish quarters of the
Polish town of Tomaszow-
Lubelski in September and Oc-
tober 1942, only a handful of
Jews escaped the massacre.
World Jewish Congress head-
quarters in New York is at-
tempting to trace about 20 men
and women who are believed
to have survived the horror of
the Nazi attack. They are need-
ed by the West German author-
ities to give evidence against
a number of Nazis who are now
being charged with participa-
tion in the murders.
One of the witnesses sought
is Zawel Weltman, whose pres-
ent whereabouts are unknown
but who, in 1947, was a DP in

The executive director of the
American Association for Jew-
ish Education, Isaac Toubin of
New York, will address the sea-
son's third Delegate Assembly
of the Jewish Community Coun-
cil on "The Developing Jewish
Community: Problems — Pros-
pects—Goals" 8:30 p.m. Wednes-
day at the Jewish Center. Stan-
ley J. Winkelman, president of
the Council, will preside.
Toubin is a graduate of Ye-
shiva University and was or-
dained at the
Jewish Theo-
logical Semin-
ary. His ad-
vance studies
at Columbia
University
were in ' his-
tory and eco-
nomics. He
w a s formerly
executive di-
rector of the
American Jew-
ish Congress
and is current-
ly a member
of the Execu-
Toubin tive Commit-
tee of the World Jewish Con-
gress. He has written and lec-
tured widely on Jewish commu-
nal organization, civil rights
and liberties, and social and
political problems affecting the
Jewish people.
During World War II, Toubin
served with the National Jewish
Welfare Board; first as associ-
ate director of its Committee
on Jewish Chaplains, and then
as director of its European
office.
