I was delighted to learn that the United Jewish Appeal is
about to observe its 25th Anniversary.
In the continuing effort to fulfill its primary aims of rescue,
relief, and rehabilitation, the UJA is adhering to the finest
humanitarian traditions of our country. This warm spirit
of compassion to assist the less fortunate has inspired the
people of UJA from its very beginnings. I understand that
during the UJA l s quarter century of operations. its funds
have been utilized to rescue more than one and a half
million persons and to provide direct relief and rehabili-
tation for more than twice that number. This is an
impressive record.

and to so many other community efforts.

We Salute the Pioneers .. .
Those who established the foundation for the State of Israel and made it
possible for hundreds of thousands of persecuted human beings to find
permanent homes in the ancient homeland . .
The leaders and workers in the movements that led to autonomy for the
seekers of freedom in the Land of Israel .
The courageous men and women whose Zionist zeal and whose
humanitarianism paved the way for justice for the survivors from the
catastrophe that resulted in the death of six million of • our fellow Jews and
suffering for entire continents . . .
The Founders of the United Jewish Appeal and their successors, who
during the 25-year history of this great movement, have helped make it possible
for the surviving Jews in many lands to regain their human dignity, for
more than a million Jews to settle in Israel, for the newcomers to be integ-
rated in Israel's Statehood.
We congratulate the United Jewish Appeal on its 25th
anniversary and wish it well in its activities in the years to come.
