LONDON, (JTA)—The British
Poale Zion party called on the
Soviet authorities to allow Rus-
sion Jews the freedom to main-
tain contact with Jews in other
lands and to facilitate the re-
union of Jewish families.
The resolution on Soviet
Jewry was adopted at the clos-
ing session of a two-day confer-
ence of the party here attended
by some 215 delegates. Other
resolutions appealed for labor
union in Israel and called for
controlled disarmament in the
Middle East.
Israel Ambassador Arthur
Lourie told the delegates that
while "it may be true that Is-
rael was now becoming indus-
trialized and has acquired some
of the less attractive features
of the affluent society," there
is, nevertheless, "a spirit of
pioneering and sacrifice and
this spirit is best manifested in
the towns and villages of the
Negev."
Ainong the leading British
personalities who addressed the
conference were George Wood-
cock. general secretary of the
Trade Union Congress, and
Tom Williams, _secretary of the
Labor Party.

WALTHAM, Mass. (JTA)-
The earliest known printed edi-
tion, of the "Zohar," classical
Cabalistic book on Jewish mys-
ticism, has been given to Bran-
deis University's Goldfarb Li-
brary by Mr. and Mrs. Maurice
Spertus of Highland Park, Ill.
The Morocco - bound volume,
printed in Mantua, Italy, is of
considerable value.
Mr. and Mrs. Spertus also in-
cluded several other manu-
scripts of exceptional value dat-
ing from the 17th and 18th cen-
tturies. These include Hebrew
manuscripts, prayers written in
Palestine in 1790, scrolls writ-
ten about 1700, a Talmud print-
ed in Amsterdam about 1724,
occasional prayers printed in
Venice about 1795, and a
Hebrew manuscript, "Y a s hir
Moshe," copied in 1671.
Spertus, who is a member of
the Council of Bibliophiles of
Brandeis, has given the univer-
sity more than 1,400 volumes
from his personal collection of
standard Judaica and H_ebraica.
Among the Spertus gifts to
Brandeis is a Cabalistic "tree,"

Jewish Agency Will Streamline Handling
of Influx of Immigrants to Israel

JERUSALEM, (JTA) — The
Jewish A g e n c y moved to
streamline the handling of im-
migration from the free coun-
tries of the world.
The Agency set up machin-
ery to coordinate. the activities
of its own immigration depart-
ment; PATWA, the organiza-
tion handling the immigration
of professional and technical
v.forkers; the economic depart-
ment and the absorption de-
partment.
The new setup was described
as the first step toward the
establishment of a coordinated
agency to handle immigration
from free countries.
Except in the United States,
a "chief emissary" will direct
and coordinate the activities of
the representatives of these de-
partments. In the U.S.A., this
function will be exercised by
the American branch of the
Jewish Agency. In Israel, the
absorption of these immigrants
will be the function of the Jew-
ish Agency's absorption depart-
ment. On the government side,
these activities will be concen-
trated in the Ministry of Corn-
mercy and Industry.

the rate of immigration into
Israel was steadily rising. He
said the newcomers should be

also widen its economic and
