Kennedy Calls on Americans to Mark
Anniversary of Warsaw Ghetto Revolt

(Direct JTA Teletype Wire.
to The Jewish News)

WASHINGTON — President
Kennedy issued Tuesday a proc-
lamation calling on the people
of the United States to -observe
the 20th anniversary of the War-
saw Ghetto uprising, April 21,
1963, with appropriate cere-
monies and activities and com-
mended Jewish heroism.
The President said that "of
the more than 400,000 Jews
whom the Nazis had previously
walled into the Warsaw ghetto,
only about 70,000 remained in
April of 1943. -

"With deadly efficiency, most
of the other inhabitants had been
transported by the Nazis to con-
centration camps and had there
been exterminated.
"The surviving Jews, suffering
from malnutrition and disease,
with pitifully few weapons and
virtually no hope of assistance
from any source, determined to
sell their lives as dearly as pos-
sible. They engaged the Nazis
in battle."
The President pointed out that
"the result was known by the

Jews to be foredoomed.
"Yet, said Mr. Kennedy,
"though they lacked both mili-
tary resources and a military
tradition, they were able to con-
duct their struggle against the
overwhelming forces of the Nazi
occupiers for more than three
weeks, thereby providing a chap-
ter in the annals of human hero-
ism, an inspiration to the peace-
loving people of the world and
a warning to would-be oppres-
sors which will long be remem-
bered."

State Department Apology to JTA
Pleases Sen. Scott of Pennsylvania

WASHINGTON, (JTA)--Sen.
Hugh Scott, Pennsylvania Repub-
lican, noted the State Depart-
ment apology to the Jewish Tele-
graphic Agency for the barring
of reporter Milton Friedman
from a press briefing and told
the Senate "this should be called
to the attention of the many
other agencies of our Govern-
ment which make wide use of
secret briefings for selected
members of the press."
Scott said "it should remind
them that the American people
have the right to know what
their Government is doing and
that arbitrary selection of re-
porters for briefings frequently
lend themselves to abuses of this
sort."
He added that "I objected to
this incident both because it was
a reflection on the integrity of
a fine news correspondent and
because it was another instance
of an attempt at news manage-
ment . . . I am pleased that the
State Department accepts the
responsibility for this incident
and implies it will not happen
again."
Meanwhile, the State Depart-
ment sent an explanation and
apology to Chairman James V.
Mathis of the Freedom of Infor-
mation Committee of Sigma
Delta Chi, the national journal-
ism fraternity, who had raised
the Friedman issue with authori-
ties. Another organization which
intervened was the American

PARIS—The French press re-
ported Wednesday another death
sentence for a Russian Jew in
a new "economic crimes" trial,
this one in Azerbaidjan.
The Jew, whose name was
given as Kansberg, was one of
four defendants in a mass trial
sentenced to death by the Azer-
baidjan S u p r e m e Court on
charges of "traffic and theft of
goods destined for Soviet co-
operatives."
The indictment, as reported
here, asserted that Kansberg
and his "accomplices' special-
ized in the purchase and sale
of "old rags and old papers
stolen from the state." Source
of the report was an account
of the trial in Pravda.
