El Al Aircrews
Go on Strike

(Direct JTA TeletyPe Wire to
The Jewish News)

TEL AVIV — El Al planes
in Israel were grounded by a
strike of aircrews at midnight
Wednesday in a dispute about
working procedures.
Despite the walkout, airline
officials managed to send one
plane to Rome with a "volun-
teer crew" which will take the
flight to that city where the
passengers will be able to trans-
fer to other planes to continue
their trips. El Al officials indi-
cated they hoped to have an-
other volunteer crew to man
another flight to Rome on
Thursday.
The strike came as a surprise
during talks on a new agree-
ment between management and
the aircrews and the Histadrut
immediately announced it was
not supporting the walkout,
which it called a wildcat strike.
The immediate cause given
by the strikers was the appoint-
ment of two captains to prepare
flight manuals, a standard pro-
Cedure during the winter season
when a number of captains are
free to do such work.
A committee representing the
aircrews said it was not con-
sulted about t h e assignment
and called the strike despite a
Histadrut request to suspend
any walkout until the next
morning for more talks. It
was pointed out that the cap-
tains had been working on the
manuals for a whole month with-
out anyone raising the question.
After the strike began,. the
Histadrut sent a strongly-
worded letter to the strike lead-
ers, warning them that if the
walkout was not cancelled im-
mediately, the Histadrut would
call on aircrews directly to re-
turn to work and ignore instruc-
tions from the strike commit-
tee. The basic demand of the
aircrews is for more pay but
the El Al management has said
it was bound by decisions of
both the government and the
Histadrut to freeze salaries for
the year.
