Producer-director John Hus- ton, seeking to ensure authen- ticity and scientific factuality in the various medical phases of his Universal Pictures film pres- entation "Freud," enlisted the technical assistance of nume- rous authorities in their respec- tive fields. The film story of "Freud" is focused on the five vital years in the life • of the handsome young Viennese doctor who first probed the secret recesses of the human mind. In the title role is Montgomery Clift who heads a cast in which Susannah York, Larry Parks, Susan Koh- ner and Eric Portman are also starred. The new feature at- traction began an extended en- gagement here Feb. 28 at the Krim Theater. For one of the major medical phases of the production, Hus- ton secured the advice and guidance of Dr. Earl Loomis, chief of the Division of Child Psychiatry at St. Luke's Hospi- tal, New York. Dr. Loomis, a recognized authority in psychi- atry, was granted a brief leave- of absence from his hospital post for the assignment and flew to Munich to work closely with Huston and co-producer Wolf- gang Reinhardt during the writ- ing of the script and in the filming of certain clinical scenes. Another eminent physician who assisted was Dr. David Stafford-Clark, one of the world's foremost doctors of psy- chiatry. He, too, worked closely with John Huston during the writing of the script and stayed on for consultation during the early stages of the filming on location in Europe. Dr. Stafford-Clark, consultant psychiatrist at the London Teaching Hospital, is author of "Psychiatry Today," .considered one of the most important re- cent volumes on the subject. He has been lecturer in psycho- pathology to Reading Univer- sity and has carried out re- search in England and America. In the film, Montgomery Clift portrays Sigmund Freud, with activities in Society" Larry Parks enacting Freud's friend and associate, Dr. Joseph Breuer. Susannah York plays one of Freud's most celebrated patients, Susan Kohner is his young wife, Eric Portman es- says the role of Prof. Theodore Meynert, and Fernand Ledoux as Professor Charcot. Others, prominent in the cast, are Ei- leen Herlie, David McCallum, David K o s s o f f and Rosalie Crutchley.
