See Need for Definition of Relationship ASY a – Tirander Engageme nt 'fold Between Am erican Jews and Israelis By HARVEY ZUCKERBERG Those who may have expect- ed to hear a clearly defined ar- gument Tuesday night between Dr. Joachim Prinz and Yakov Aviad were disappointed. It should be added, rightly so, for the two men did not as- sume postures of "for" and "against" before an audience of 300 at Cong. Bnai Moshe. Both declared their hope for the "creative future of Jewry" (they were not favorably dis- posed to the term "survival") and their differences of opinion were seen only in areas of ap- praisal. Dr. Prinz, president of the American Jewish Congress, and Aviad, press officer for the Consul of Israel in New York, met for their discourse here under the auspices of the Michigan Council of the Congress in cooperation with the Synagogue Adult Insti- tute. The program was designed as a continuation of conversations held last summer in Jerusalem between Israel Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion, Prinz and others. Prinz and Aviad on Tuesday night engaged in a dialogue on the topic "Is Israel Essential for Jewish Survival?" And while neither was pleased with the title of the exchange, they at- tempted to touch upon the re- lationship between American -• •••Adr••• PLASTIC SLIPCOVERS Custom-Made 8 Gauge - Glass Clear PROTECT-O-COV.7R DI 1-1000 18055 JAMES COUZENS INN IN I• COUPON] NI MI Br SPECIAL OFFER! 1 REG. He suggested that the present situation is far from favorable and is, indeed, "un- healthy." "The check has become the symbol of American Jewry's relationship to Israel," he said. "It is tragic. I yearn for the day when Israel will be independent. But then what will American Jewry do with itself? The bridge will be gone." Aviad responded that it is only natural that a son for a time resents the help given him by his father. He added, "If the giving stage is the bridging stage, let's not abhor it too much. It serves its purpose." Prinz in turn intimated that Aviad was "smoothing out dif- ferences" between Israelis and American Jews. He amended, however, that "prophetic Juda- ism is optimistic, but not irre- sponsibly so." Prinz asserted that the rela- tionship of "benefactor and beneficiary," compounded by the fact that Israel has been "romanticized," has prevented American Jews from seeing Israel as it really is. He advised that American Jewry not look to Israel as a religious example to follow, citing the problems of defini- tive Jewry in that country. (And later in the evening, responding to a call for ques- tions from the audience, Lawrence Krohn complained that Israelis are areligious.) "Israelis are not religious," Prinz said. "They are nationa- lists. But though Israel is a sovereign state, it is not to us a foreign state." He said we have a spiritual concern in Israel in the con- text of the continuity of Jewry, but that a religious understand- ing between us is difficult. Commenting on Prinz's re- marks, Aviad said that "Israel is criticized by some as irre- ligious and by others as the- ocracy. World Jewry is a very diversified quality and you (Is- rael) cannot do right by every- body." Prinz cautioned that "the flag of Israel is not our flag. Israel's foreign policy is not our foreign policy." He propos- ed that declarations be made for political independence and cultural interdependence be- tween American Jews and Israel as the basis for the bridge be- tween the two communities. He scoffed at the demands placed by Prime Minister Ben-Gurion on the adoption of the Hebrew language by American Jews as a vital and necessary link in the connec- tion. He said that what Ben- Gurion expects from such an accomplishment is an illu- sion. He also termed illusion Ben-Gurion's stand that all Jews should emigrate to Israel. • You Get All 3 in Mountain Valley Water 1. Delicious taste! "Nineteenth Century Euro- pean, Herzlian Zionism does not apply to American Jewry," he said. "The moment for the massive Aliyah of United States Jewry was missed in , 1948." Prinz said there are two rea- sons for Aliyah: escape from suffering and the idealism to live as a Jew the way a Jew can live in Israel.
