The board of directors of
Cong. Bnai Israel of Pontiac
has adopted a policy resolution ,
forbidding religious ceremonies
in the synagogue which are to
be followed by public celebra-
tions in violation of Kashruth.
The directive also stipulates
that the rabbi will not officiate
at any event outside the syna-
gogue which would entail vio-
lations of the Sabbath or Kash-
ruth.
A synagogue statement de-
clared:
"Realizing the sentiments
and desires of their rabbi,
Rabbi Israel Goodman, the
congregational board unani-
mously took this important
and vital step in order to stem
the tide of Kashruth and Sab-
bath violators."

Vatican Names Israel Officially for 1st time

ROME, (JTA)
Israel was
named officially by the Vatican
for the first time since the State
was founded in 1948. The rec-
ognition came via the annual,
1963, edition of the "Pontifical
Yearbook."
The Yearbook mentioned the
"Apostolic delegate of Jerusa-
lem and Palestine," identify-
ing the latter as the Vatican's
representative in "Israel, Jord-

and and Cyprus." By _official
Vatican definition, an Apostolic
delegate represents the Holy
See without having diplomatic
status. That form of Vatican
representation holds true for
all countries with which the
Vatican has no diplomatic re-
lations.

21 Sponsors of UN
Peace Resolution Get
Israel Horizon Award

"The only solution to establish
firm and lasting peace in the
Middle East can be achieved
through negotiations between the
countries immediately con-
cerned," and "the sooner all na-
tions of the world understand
that Israel is here to stay, the
sooner we will approach the
goal of establishing peace in this
region."
This was stated Sunday when
21 sponsors of the United Na-
tions resolution calling for di-
rect negotiations between Israel
and the Arab states received the
Israel Horizons Awards at a re-
ception on the occasion of the
magazine's tenth anniversary,
held at Carnegie Endowment for
World Peace, United Nations
Plaza.
The Permanent Representative
of Gabon, Ambassador Aristide
Issembe, Chairman of the Afri-
can bloc at the UN, and Ambas-
sador Christie W. Doe of Liberia
responded for the sponsors, of
the resolution, and the Minister
from Israel in charge of African
affairs, Hanan Aynor, responded
for his country. The chairman
was Richard Yaffe, managing
editor of Israel Horizons, and
speaking for the magazine was
the chairman of its board of
editors, Avraham Schenker.
