Put on Talith Before Tefillin (Copyright, 1963, JewiSh Telegraphic Agency, Inc.) The Talith is put on before the Tefillin at services. The most popular reason giv- en is that when one has to do two things • which are holy coin- inandments, he first does that which is more frequently ob- served and thus more regularly observed. The Talith is used every day of the year while the Tefillin are not used on Sab- baths and major festivals. Thus the Talith is put on before the Tefillin. The application of this rule generally implies Judaism's great emphasis upon the impor- tance of the daily observance over the special deeds. Actually it is one's daily habits which form character and morale more than special events in one's life. There are some who claim that the Talith is put on first because the commandment Of fringes (Tzitzith) serve to remind us of all the command- ments while the commandment to put on Tefillin is a localized affair. It is interesting •to note that at least one authority is quoted as saying that some did put on the Tefillin before the Talith because the Tefillin have a higher degree of holiness than the Talith because they contain holy scrolls (Nimuke Yosef- Tzitzith). The _commandment of put- ting on the Tefillin is directly and closely associated with Bar-Mitzvah. Actually the age of Bar-Mitz- vah (13 years and a day) makes a boy responsible for the com- mandments. Several reasons are indicated for making it especial- ly the Tefillin which are stress- ed. Some claim it is • because other commandments are items which may not occur every day while Tefillin are daily require- ments. Thus this is surely to be observed on the first day or two of the boy's maturity. Others it is because a may observe other coin- boy may mandmenis at a much earlier age while with regard to Tefil- lin there is a special precaution taken which requires one to be mature enough to - "care" for the Tefillin, or "guard" them. ("And thou shalt guard them.") This kind of maturity comes at the age of 13 and thus the rab- bis- discourage the use • of the Tefillin before this age. Also, it may be said, that the wearing of the Tefillin is an ob- vious' symbol while so many other commandments are not so openly performed. Thus, one of the most obvious signs which a boy shows when he is Bar- Mitzvah age is the wearing of Tefillin—hence the close link between Tefillin and Bar-Mitz- vah. Bnai David Games Nite The Cong.
