The report on the Leiner case, which was probed by the Royal Commission since Jan- uary, 1962, was filed here by the head of the commission. Justice Dalton Wells. Accord- ing to the report, however, Rabbi Leiner did refuse to re- spond to "reasonable questions" posed by the arresting officers. The policemen, on the other hand, were absolved of inten- tional anti-Semitism but were criticized for not understanding the religious contentions of a rabbi, 'Who, legitimately, object- ed to riding in a police van on a Friday night or to signing po- lice documents on the Sabbath. Rabbi Leiner, who is suing 18 policemen for beating him, was arrested on a Friday night, Jan. 26, 1962; as he was on his way home from religious services. He was a teacher in a Hebrew school in this city at the time. Justice Wells pointed out in his report that the rabbi in no way resembled the suspect for whom the police had spread a drag- net. The Canadian Jewish .Con- gress was represented at the hearings before the Royal Com- mission by two attorneys, Syd- ney M. Harris and J. Sydney Midanik, and presented a brief on the case. The Association for Civil Liberties and the Canadian Bar. Association had also inter- vened in the case. The Royal Commission's find- ings were released by Attorney General Fred Gass who said he was forwarding the entire rec- ord in the case to the Metro Police Commission for action. Voice from Poland For the first time since the liberation of Poland from the Nazis, Jewish representative bodies in Poland are now addressing themselves directly to American Jewish groups and individual Jews with an appeal for contributions for a monument for Jewish martyrs in Treblinka, where the Nazis annihilated 800,000 Jews. . . . Their appeal is being favorably considered by the Joint Distribution Committee. . . . The Jewish Claims Confer- ence will probably make a substantial contribution in response to this appeal. . . . However, the Jews in Poland expect also other Jewish groups—as well as individual Jews who lost their relatives in Poland during the years of Nazi extermination— to express their solidarity with the project by sending contribu- tions, small and large. . . . The Treblinka project will cost about 75 million zlotys, and the Polish government, as well as individual Jewish and non-Jewish citizens in Poland, will con- tribute to this sum. . . . But the Polish Committee for the Building of a Monument at Treblinka is undertaking a world- wide fund-raising campaign and the Jews in Poland expect American Jews to share in this drive. . . . Jewish organizations abroad which will make substantial contributions for the projected monument will be invited to send delegations to Poland to attend the unveiling ceremony. . . In Poland, Jews have already started their fund-raising campaign and have so far raised several hundred thousand zlotys. . . . The 800,000 Jews killed by the Nazis in the Treblinka death camp were exterminated in one -year—from July 1942 till August 1943— in 10 gas chambers there which were "operating" day and night without a moment of interruption. . . . About 300,000 of these Jewish victims were from Warsaw, the remainder were brought in transports from other parts of Poland and from 10 other European countries. . . . The Polish government has been very generous in financing commemorative undertakings; it has recently spent 40 million zlotys on maintaining the notorious Auschwitz camp as a memorial and intends to spend another 80 billion zlotys in the immediate future. . . . It has also spent about 20 million zlotys for an exhibit of the Maidanec camp, where tens of thousands of Jews were annihilated. Israel Cabinet Minister Blames UN for Lack of Peace Pacts with Arabs (Direct JTA Teletype Wire to The Jewish News) JERUSALEM—An Israeli cab- inet minister who took part in the postwar Mixed Armistice Agreement negotiations asserted Wednesday that the United Na- tions Palestine Conciliation Commission was to blame for the fact that peace treaties with the Arab countries did not fol- low the armistice pacts. Eliyahu Sasson, Minister of Posts, made the statement in an address to a Jerusalem munici- pality luncheon. He was one of the signatories of the armistice agreement with Egypt and he participated in the peace talks with the Arabs at Lausanne in the same year. He told the luncheon that Dr. Ralph Bunche, negotiating on behalf of the UN, obtained Arab agreement to an armistice in 1949 by negotiating between Israel and each of the Arab countries separately. . However, the PCC invited all the Arab countries to sit at one table and each delegation felt it had to vie for the most ex- treme stand against Israel, Sas- son said—a competition, he added, which still continues. "Had we been able to see into the future," he said, "we would have taken a firmer stand on such details, but we were cer- tain the situation was tempo- rary and that permanent peace agreements would soon follow." CBC Cancels Nazi Interviews on TV TORONTO, (JTA)—The Cana- dian Broadcasting Corporation announced the withdrawal of a taped television interview with Adrien Arcand, Canadian pre- war Fascist leader.
