Some Norms of Jewish Life Help Prevent Disease, Journal Reports
The current issue of the semi-
annual Hebrew Medical Journal,
Volume 2,1962, edited by Dr.
Moses Einhorn, of New York,
concludes the 35th year of con-
tinuous publication. Written in
Hebrew and English, the Hebrew
Medical Journal has played an
important part in the fostering
of a medical literature and
terminology in the language of
the Bible.
This issue is notable for two
important studies in cancer re-
search. Dr. Kurt Stern, professor
of pathology at the University of
Illinois College of Medicine, Chi-
cago, examines current concepts
and trends in cancer research.
Dr. Eliahu Bogair of the Bio-
Research Institute in Cambridge,
Mass., deals with new types of
chemo-therapeutic drugs em-
ployed in the treatment of cancer.

Perez Zadik of Haifa, Israel. The
author examines the incidence of
certain types of cancer among
orthodox and non-orthodox Jews
of a similar social level. Zadik
points out that cancer preventing
methods, although practiced with-
out direct knowledge and inten-
tion, were already known in pre-
biblical times, and that the Bible,
too, has a number of commands
which regulate, and often restrict
noticeably, the life of the religious
Jew.
But the author shows that cer-
tain ways and norms of life en-
forced by law resulted in the
prevention or restriction of
cancer.

time, according to Zadik, that
there exists a distinct relation-
ship between the frequency of
cancer of the breast and the num-
ber of births, as well as the
length of the feeding period.
Frequent births and long feeding
periods show a favorable counter-
action against the rise of this
disease. It is in the nature of
things that religious women go
through more pregnancies since
Jewish law prohibits birth pre-
vention. It has also long been
established that circumcision
serves as a preventive measure
against the formation of cancer.
The author further points out
that it is now known that the

Tacuara Gang
Attacks Jews
in Buenos Aires
(Direct JTA Teletype Wire
to The Jewish News)
BUENOS AIRES — A large
group of members of the Tacu-
ara neo-Nazi youth movement
attacked a group of Jewish tour-
ists on the Beach of Miramar, a
luxury summer resort, it was
reported here Tuesday.
The incident, which began as
a minor fracas, swiftly devel-
oped into a clash involving 300
persons which was stopped by
police intervention. The police
detained several of the youths
believed to be members of
wealthy families • but promptly
released them. Police vigilance
at the resort was intensified.
Javits Urges U. S.
Take Constructive
Action in Mid-East
NEW YORK, (JTA) — A new
look by the State Department at
the developments in the Middle
East, in the light of Nasser's
threats to Israel and also to
Arab countries, was urged by
Senator Jacob K. Javits at a
reception tendered by the Amer-
ican Israel Public Affairs Com-
mittee at the Town Club here.
"A new look by the Adminis-
tration at the consequences of
its current policy should lead to
constructive action on such mat-
ters as the present arms imbal-
ance, the continued blockade of
the Suez Canal against Israel
shipping, the Arab economic boy-
cott and our passive attitude to-
ward the Arab blacklisting of
American business f i r m s by
states which could not survive
without financial assistance de-
rived from the American tax-
payer," the New York senator
,declared.
rectly dependent on the amount
of tobacco smoked, and equally
on the method of smoking, espe-
cially on the force applied in
inhaling. The modern Jew in
civilized countries, the author
emphasizes, is no less addicted
to smoking than his neighbor.
With religious Jews, however,
the situation is different.
There is first of all a differ-
ence in the quantity of tobacco
s m o k e d, since the religious
smoker has to interrupt the habit
at least during 52 Sabbaths of
the year and also during eight_ to
10 holidays. With regard to
women, the strict adherence to
custom and virtue either prohib-
its or restricts smoking. The vol-
untary giving up of a great num-
ber of enjoyments and comforts,
because of an ethical-pedagogical
consciousness, is the deeper rea-
son why a religious Jew cannot
become an addict in a hopeless
and compulsive way.
The author also points out that
the observance of the Sabbath,
bringing as it does a respite from
the weekly labors and daily
chores tends favorably and pro-
phylactically to influence the circ-
ulation and nervous systems. Thus
there might be a diminution of
coronary heart attacks which
have so increased in the civilized
world, the author concludes.
Dr. Louis Brinn presents a
comprehensive study entitled
"Jews, Genetics and Diseases."
The author examines a variety of
diseases which appear to be more
prevalent among Jews. He shows
that a higher incidence of certain
diseases among Jews is not neces-
sarily due to hereditary factors,
but to environmental background
as well.
