PITTSBURGH—A $250,000 two-story addition to the Hebrew Institute of Pittsburgh has been approved by the Institute's board to replace older buildings which are being sold as part of the site of an apartment development . . . The Montefiore Hospital Research Department has received a federal grant of $177,121 for continuation of the hospital's animal studies of the effects of removal of half of the brain on the affected animal's behavior. PHILADELPHIA—Governor David L. Lawrence proclaimed Jan. 24 as "Samuel H. Daroff Day" throughout Pennsylvania in conjunction with the dedication here yesterday of Samuel H. Daroff American Jewish Congress House. CAMDEN, N. J.Construction work was begun for a $225,000 sanctuary and children's chapel for Cong. Beth Jacob in suburban Merchantville., JERSEY CITY, N. J. Mayor Thomas Gangemi issued an official proclamation through which the city joined in observing the 80th anniversary of Cong. Sons of Israel here. CLEVELAND—The Cleveland Jewish Community Federation reports that a United States Public Health Service three-year grant of $160,000 has been given to Mount Sinai Hospital. LOS ANGELES—The United Jewish Welfare Fund last year raised $6,688,428, the largest amount attained in any drive since 1949 . . . The Wilshire Boulevard Temple celebrated the 100th anniversary of the grant of its charter by the State of California. Massachusetts Kills Bill to Reimburse Tuition for Education BOSTON (JTA) — The Joint Education Committee of the Massachusetts Legislature killed a bill which would have re- quired municipalities in the state to reimburse parents for tuition paid to educate their children in private schools. Massachusetts has a substantial network of Catholic parochial schools and some Jewish reli- gious day schools. The action was in the form of an adverse report which kills the measure unless its support- ers can obtain a majority vote , — Zionist Organization of America Will Hold Convention in Israel to bring the measure up for consideration in the House where it originated. Senator Mary C. Fonseca, chairman of the committee, said the adverse vote was unanimous but did not give any explanation for the negative vote. James J. Fallon, Jr., petition- er for the bill, said in testimony before the committee that the measure might be unconstitu- tional. For that reason, he also filed a proposal to amend the state constitution to permit use of public funds to aid private schools. He sponsored a similar aid to private schools measure three years ago. It also was de- feated in committee.
