Volume of Essays
byWorldLeaders
Honors Dr. Silver

In tribute to Abba Hillel
Silver, most widely honored as
Jewish statesman who "taught
a generation and trained it for
the privilege of experiencing .
Israel's rebirth," a jubilee vol-
ume of essays is being issued
for the occasion of his 70th
birthday and 45 years of service
at the Temple in Cleveland.
David Ben-Gurion, Abba Eban
and Moshe Sharett are among
the distinguished contributors
to this work of homage, "In the
Time of Harvest," which Mac-
millan will publish on Jan. 20.
Leaders from all parts of
the land, noted government,
religious and .0 niv er sit y
spokesmen, will participate
in a dinner on Sunday in Dr.
Silver's honor. There will be
a delegation at the dinner
from Detroit.
The world leaders, scholars
and rabbis represented have
written articles within the scope
of Dr. Silver's lifelong con-
cerns: Jewish survival, Biblical
scholarship and the fight for
social betterment.
The contributors address their
scholarly articles to the com-
munity at large. Among the
writers are such celebrated spe-
cialists as President Itzhak Ben-
Zvi of I s r a e 1, Dr. Nelson
Glueck, Dr. Robert Gordis, Ger-
shom Scholem and Walter Low-
dermilk. The range of subjects
extends from the origin of the
"marriage canopy" to religion
in a free society; from Israel's
founding to Paul's conversion;
from Biblical archeology to
North America's oldest syna-
gogue.
Edited by Daniel Jeremy Sil-
ver, son of Dr. Silver, "In the
Time of Harvest" includes, in
addition to 23 essays by leaders
of Jewish life, a biographical
appreciation of Dr. Silver, ex-
tensive selections from his ser-
mons and a bibliography of his
published works.

Montreal School
Board Withholds
Grants from Jews

MONTREAL, (JTA) — Pro-
tests against t h e withholding
from some Jewish parents of
statutory grants available for
children attending recognized
independent high schools were
lodged by the Canadian Jewish
Congress here with Paul Gerin-
Lajoire, Minister of Youth in
Quebec, and the Protestant
School Board of Greater Mon-
treal.
According to the CJC, the
Protestant School Board is dis-
claiming responsibility to par-
ents of children living outside
Montreal and Outremont, on the
grounds that Jewish taxes in
those areas are paid to a neutral
school panel and not to the Pro-
testant school panel.
Affected are parents in sev-
eral suburbs, whose children at-
tend either recognized independ-
ent Jewish high schools — Herz-
liah, Adath Israel, Rabbinical
College and Beth Jacob — or
independent Protestant high
schools. Congress proposed "a
practical handling of these
cases" and asked for "the re-
moval of the inequity."

Vandenbergh Elected
to Dutch Parliament

AMSTERDAM (JTA) — Dr.
Robert Vandenbergh, an Am-
sterdam Jewish alderman, was
elected to the lower chamber
of the Dutch parliament as a
Labor Party deputy. He is the
fourth member of parliament of
Jewish origin, serving along
with two Socialists and one
Communist. The Dutch senate,
the upper chamber, has two
Jewish members, both Socialists.

ON DETROIT EDISON'S
60th BIRTHDAY
SALUTE TO THE
SOUTHEASTERN MICHIGAN
COMMUNITY

!ACE IN 1903...

in the first year of Detroit Edison's corporate life ... our
company employed 200 people, had 22,000 customers, 135
shareowners, and was able to meet a maximum demand
of 5,000 kilowatts of electric power.

NOW. . 60 years later .. .

Edison people number 9,500, serving 1,293,000 customers,
with an electrical system capability of more than 4,000,000
kilowatts. And our company is owned by 106,000 investors,
most of whom live right here in Michigan.

In a very large measure, Detroit Edison owes its success to
the environment in which the company was born—and to all
the people who through the years have made up the great and
growing community of Detroit and Southeastern Michigan.

On this 60th Anniversary, we offer our sincerest thanks to
all these people—the doctors, ministers, teachers, all the
professions —the engineers and inventors, the skilled crafts-
men of our industries—the builders, the merchants and the
farmers—the men and women who have invested their
savings to make our enterprise productive and successful.

To the citizens of Southeastern Michigan, we give special
recognition for their part in enabling our company to grow
and thus contribute to the growth and prosperity of our
state. Through these people—all our customers we look
forward with confidence to another ..
