The Polish Embassy in Wash-
ington announces that a joint
committee of several Polish or-
ganizations has been set up in
Poland to commemorate the
20th anniversary of the Warsaw
Ghetto Uprising.
The heroism of the upris-
ing had been marked in De-
troit, under auspices of the
Jewish Community Council,
annually, on the anniversary
of the great resistance, for
nearly 15 years.
The Polish Embassy's state-
ment announces that the com-
mittee in Poland preparing the
program - of the ceremony is
composed of representatives of
ZBOWID (national organization
of former combatants and Nazi
prisoners); the Jewish Social
and Cultural Association; the
Jewish Institute of History and
other organizations.
The program of the ceremony
will include the unveiling of a
monument to honor the victims
of the Nazi concentration camp
in Treblinka.
Attendance of delegations,
groups from abroad and indi-

vidual visitors is expected.
The Embassy's statement de-
clares:
"The so-called liquidation of
Warsaw Ghetto by Nazi Ger-
mans began on April 19, 1943.
D e spite the overwhelming
Nazi forces the Jewish fighters
put up strong resistance. The
heroic battle lasted until May
16, 1943. About 12,000 Jews
lost their lives in the battle.
Over 56,000 Jews, mainly wom-
en, children and old men were
deported to the death camp at
Treblinka and died in the gas
chambers.
"During the Nazi occupation
5,384,000 Polish citizens lost

their lives in death camps, exe-
cutions, pacification actions,
concentration camps, etc.
"In this total figure 3,200,000
were Polish citizens of Jewish
descent."
