THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS — Friday, January '11, 1963-

.

Many •pictorial descriptions
have been published of Israel's
communities. Supplementing
them in impressive fashion is a
book devoted to "the Christian
communities in Israel," which
has appeared under the title
"Faith Walks the Land."
Published by Reniarc Associ-
ates, Marshall Building, Cleve-
land, this book was ably edited
by Israel I. Taslitt of Cleveland
and was produced by Antiqui-
ties of the Holy Land, Jerusa-
lem, and printed in Israel.

The authenticity of the col-
lected works and photographs
is attested to by the assist-
ance given the editor by the
Patriarchal • Vicar of Israel,
Bishop Pier Giorgio Chiap-
pero; Archbishop George Ha-
kim of Acre, Haifa and all
of Galilee; Bishop Isidoros,
the Metropolitan of Nazareth;
General Secretary of the
YMCA of Jerusalem Herbert
L. Minard and the director of
the Southern Baptist Conven-
tion in Israel, Dwight L.
Baker.

Appropriately enough, the
book opens with an excerpt
from the Israel Declaration of
Independence affirming the
state's religious freedom.
Emphasizing this freedom,
the leading article in the book,
by Prof. E. Vitta of the Israel
Ministry of Justice is on the
subject "Legal Status of the
Christian Communities in Is-
rael." The jurisdiction of .reli-
gious courts is described, and
the status of the various com-
munities is outlined by Prof.
Vitta.
The many interesting and
impressive photographs.describe
the religious observances of the
various faiths in Israel.

Parley of Canadian:.
.V'ewish- Teens Telisof
Identification Goal

:MONTREAL, (JTA)-A res-
olUtion calling upon JeWis h'
community centers and -YMHAs
to make a "great effort to carry

out their potential for :Jewish
programs" was adopted here at

Canada's first teenage confer-
ence, called under the auspices
of the Canadian CounCil of
YMHAs and Jewish Community
Centers. About 200 Jewish teen-
agers from Toronto ; Ottawa as
well as Montreal attended the
parley.
- The –resolution urged , that
Cepter and Y programs "be
extended to include many other
things besides Jewish holiday
celebrations," and called upon
teen councils to plan for year-
round activities "to give teen-
agers the opportunities to learn
a great deal more about their
Jewish heritage." Another res-
olution urged the delegates to
continue discussions along the
lines of the first draft after
they return to their homes. The
conference also voted to hold
another, similar meeting next
year, in Toronto.

Germany Asks Chile
to Extradite Nazi
Who Killed Jews

BONN, (JTA)—The West Ger-
man government formally re-
quested the government of Chile
to extradite Walter Rauff, a lead-
ing Gestapo officer and former
general of Hitler's SS, who is
under arrest in Chile on Ger-
man charges of having partici-
pated in the wartime murder of
90,000 Jews.
An indictment against Rauff
was handed here Jan. 6. Al-
though no extradition treaty ex-
ists between West Germany and
Chile, the government requested,
nevertheless, that it be permit-
ted by Chile to bring the war
criminal here for. trial. Rauff
was arrested in Chile two
months ago at the request of the

Canadian Donors Help
to Expand Oriental
Institute of Hebrew U.

,

By including in the text of
this book the list of the heads
of Christian communities in
Israel, and of the "Christian
Hospices in Israel," "Faith
Walks the Land" becomes addi-
tionally helpful to students of
religious communities in the
Jewish State.
An essay on "Land of Learn-
ing" deScribes the status of
education in Israel.
"Truth from the Earth" de-
scribes archaeological expedi-
tions and findings.
There are essays on "The
Negev," "The Crusader King-
dom," "The Holy Places" and
"The Dead Sea Scrolls" — all
adding to the merits of this im-
pressive book.

MONTREAL, (JTA) — An ex-
pansion program for the work
of the Oriental Institute of the
Hebrew University at Jerusalem
was announced here following
the establishment of a $30,000
grant to the Institute by three
members of the Canadian
Friends of the Hebrew Uni-
versity. The grant was made by
Jesse and Milton Lowenthal and
their sister, Mrs. Mabel L.
Lewit.
One of the immediate projects
to be undertaken, by the Insti-
tute as a result of the Lowen-
thal-Lewit grant will be a series
of translations from Arabic into
Hebrew and from Hebrew into
Arabic of classical and modern
literary works in both langua-
ges. Another part of the pro-
gram will revolve around an
Arabic-Hebrew dictionary. The
Institute is also planning to set
up libraries for Afro-Asian stu-
dies. The Rockefeller Founda-
tion had given the Institute an
additional grant of $10,000.

days, he will order the dissolu-
tion of the municipal body and
will appoint a commission of
civil servants to administer the
city's affairs.
The entire "Beersheba Scan-
dal" came before the Knesset
with Herut moving a resolution
for a government inquiry com-
mission to probe the political
affairs at Beersheba. The mo-
tion was defeated and the
Knesset voted instead to refer
to a parliamentary committee a
proposal that new elections be
held in Beersheba.
The fight started 13 months
ago when Beersheba's 15-mem-
ber Municipal Council voted to
oust Mayor David Touviyahu, a
member of Mapai, putting in
his place Zev Zarisi, a member
of Mapam. Later, a member of
the eight-member majority that
voted this change joined the
Mapai f action to help oust
Zarisi.

two major factions. A 15th

member, David H a c h a m, is
"missing," presumably hiding
in a Mapai kibbutz, and the
evenly divided council cannot
break a tie without him.
The party argument appears
to be directed toward splitting
the city's top offices, so that
Mapai would have its Mayoralty
candidate while Mapai would
designate the Deputy Mayor.
