Rabbi Donin Urges Rabbis' Refusal
to Officiate at Non-Kosher Affairs

Rabbi Hayim Donin, spiritual
leader of Cong. Bnai David, has
informed members of his syna-
gOgue of the reasons behind his
refusal to of f i c i a t e at cere-
monies followed by non-Kosher
meals.
Explaining his position, he
said, "Where we (rabbis) go
out of our way to cooperate
in the breakdown of important
Jewish tenets and values, either
our judgement is to be ques-
tioned, or our sincerity becomes
suspect, or our courage is doubt-
ful."
Rabbi Donin said the wedding
dinner (or Bar Mitzvah) is a
"seudat mitzvah," a religious
feast, and is itself the fulfill-
ment of religious requirements.
In a religious sense, he said, it
is the second part of the cere-
mony. Thus, he said, it is not
hypocritical for a family that

Shrinks Hemorrhoids
Without Surgery

Stops itch—Relieves Pain

For the first time science has found

a new healing substance with the as-

tonishing ability to shrink hemor-
rhoids and to relieve pain — without
surgery. In case after case, while
gently relieving pain, actual reduc-
tion (shrinkage) took place. Most
amazing of all — results were so thor-
ough that sufferers made astonishing
statements like "Piles have ceased to
be a problem!" The secret is a new
healing substance (Bio-Dyne®)— dis-
covery of a world-famous research
institute. This substance is now avail-
able in suppository or ointment form,
called Preparation H®. At all drug
counters.

does not observe kashruth to
adhere to the full requirements
of a religious occasion proper-
ly.
"To invite a rabbi to perform
a religious ceremony," he said,
"and then to turn around and
celebrate it in a manner that
defies all religious tradition is
the height of paradox ... What
could be more ludicrous than
a rabbi or cantor getting up at
some wedding or Bar Mitzvah
dinner to make a lamotzi' and
thank God for the very food
He cautioned us not to eat?"
Rabbi Donin reminded that
there are six kosher catering
establishments in the city and
that for the past seven years the
downtown hotels have allowed
kosher caterers to cater in their
halls. Rabbi Donin, on a rueful
note added:
"I wish all the other rabbis
in Detroit felt likewise, for I
have no doubt that if all of us
(except, of course, the Reform)
united in a firm policy, it would
succeed in drastically improv-
ing the state of affairs. For
when people know that a rabbi
not only disapproved of such
celebrations, but backs up his
disapproval with a resolve not
to become a party to it, it does
succeed in discouraging it.
"Let's face it! The moment that
people become aware that a
rabbi goes to non-kosher places,
though he himself may not eat
there, or will be satisfied with
a fruit plate, there is an ele-
ment of approval."
