Detroit Group First in the Land to Receive.
Revised Torah Translation; This City Again
Pioneers in Aiding Project's•Completion

An historically significant oc-
casion was marked here Sunday
morning when a group of approxi-
mately 60 Detroiters were the
first in the land to receive their
inscribed, de luxe, limited edi-
tion copies of The Torah — Five
Books of Moses — in the new
revised translation, published by
the Jewish Publication Society
of America.
The recipients, were part of
the group of local sponsors of
the revised translation project of
the JPS who pioneered, six years
ago, in providing the initial funds
to enable the commission of
- noted scholars to undertake the
task of revising the translation
that first was published by the
JPS in 1917.
The presentation of the Bibles
was made at a breakfast at the
10-Mile Road Jewish Community
Center by Leonard N. Simons, a
member of the national governing
board of the publication society.
The guest speakers were Edwin
Wolf II, chairman of the JPS
publication committee and form-
er president of the society, who
now is one of the pillars in spon-
soring increased cultural activi-
ties in the U.S. as president of
the National Foundation for Jew-
ish Cultural; and Lesser Zuss-
man, JPS executive secretary.
Judge Theodore Levin, also a
member of the JPS national
board, introduced Wolf. Philip
Slomovitz, the third national- JPS
board member from Detroit, pre-
sided.

Wolf pointed out that "the
forces of assimilation are so
strong that unless there is
both knowledge and a pride of
knowledge Jewry may disap-
pear into an amorphous corn-
nnmity, and the world will be
the poorer."

-

Jews in America can be tre-
mendously proud," he said.
"For the first time," he
added, "we are free from ar-
chaic terms that were bor-
rowed from other sources in
the new Bible translation."
Wolf said that those who worry
about "tampering with history"
and who have criticized the JPS
undertaking are just the ones
who have given a "hechsher"
to the Anglican version, to the
King James text of hundreds of
years ago. He pointed out that
Protestants have revised their
version of the Bible and have
made changes in the old King
James version, and he decried at-
tempts to prove that Jews are
"tampering" with revised terms.
"What we have just achieved
is the greatest contribution the
American Jewish community has
made to scholarship in our gen-
eration," he asserted.

Zussman described the proc-
ess that was followed' in the
six-year task of completing the
revision of the Torah transla-
tion and announced that the
work will begin soon for the
revision of the translations of
the Prophets and Writings.

Announcement was made to
the gathered sponsors of the
scholarly translation work that
the Jewish Publication Society
now has undertaken, at a cost of
$500,000 for the coming six
years, to continue the great proj-
ect which will include the follow-
ing works:
The Chumash with Haftoroth
and Megilloth (Hebrew and Eng-
lish).
The Prophets (English).
The Writings (English)
The H o 1 y Scriptures (Eng-
lish).
The Holy Scriptures (Hebrew
and English).

Mare than 50 .Detroiters al-
ready have joined the new ef-
fort by pledging the sum of
$150 each — by pledging $25
yearly contributions — to- make
the new task possible.
Simons stated that the Detroit
goal for this undertaking will be
to enroll 200 sponsors.
Zussman said that the Torah
and forthcoming editions of the
translated Biblical works will
be limited editions and are cer-
tain to beccime collectors' items.

Dr. Richard C. Hertz, also one
