Algerian Jewry was reduced
from an old-established, pros-
perous community of about 130,-
000 to between 10,000 and 15,-
000. There were reductions in
the numbers of Jews in Moroc-
co and Tunisia, many of whom,
with Algerian Jews, moved to
France.
Except for Jewish immigrants
from North Africa, some of
whom went to Israel, Jewish
migration was on a minor scale
in 1962, involving only modest
movements of Jews from East-
ern Europe to Israel.
Detroit Physician
Returns to Poetry
Dorrance & Co. (2047 Locust,
Philadelphia 3) has just pub-
lished a volume of poems by Dr.
Jean B. Rosenbaum of 19200
Canterbury, under the title
"Love in a Dying World." In
its announcement about the De-
troiter's poetic work, the pith-
Ushers state:
"Dr. Rosenbaum returns to
poetry with new maturity sea-
soned by his years of human
experience in medicine. Origin-
ally a published poet, his crea-
tivity was interrupted by many
years of medical education,
teaching and research. During
this period he developed the
artificial heart stimulator and
conducted basic research in a
multitude of medical areas. This
has led to international renown
and has made him the recipient
of a host of fellowships, teaching
appointments, and r es e a r c h
awards. Finally settled in the
practice of psychoanalytic psychi-
atry, he has also enjoyed na-
tional recognition as.an original
researcher in several areas of
human behavior. He brings all
this, plus his success as a pro-
fessional sculptor, back to his
first area of creativity, poetry.
The intervening years have sharp-
ened his poetic perceptiveness
and increased his sensitivity so
that he is able to synthesize his
obvious creative genius into a
brilliant and powerful analysis
of modern man's dilemma."
Poll Shows Jewish
Women in U.S. Are
Against Intermarriage
NEW YORK, (JTA)—Jewish
women in the United States are
much more strongly opposed to
mixed marriages than are Prot-
estant and Catholic Women, the
Saturday Evening Post reported
in its current issue.
The report was based on a
sampling study by Dr. George
Gallup, head of the Gallup Poll,
and Evan Hill, of 2,300 women,
1,800 wives and 500 single wo-
men. One of the questions put
to the respondents is: "Would
it make much difference to you
if a daughter of yours wished
to marry a man of a different
religion?"
The answers indicated that 74
per cent of the Jewish women
said they opposed such mar-
riages, compared with 54 per
cent of Catholic women and 45
per cent of Protestant women.
The report added that few of
the women protested such mar-
riages on grounds of religious
conviction. "More than half of
those who disapproved are quite
pragmatic in their reasons," the
report noted, adding that they
believed that such marriages
"often do not work."
