Announcement was made this
week by the Women's Auxiliary
of the Jewish National Fund that
Dr. Joseph P. Sternstein, na-
tional director of the JNF, will
be the guest speaker at the an-
nual JNF women's donor event,
at Temple Israel, at 12:30 Tues-
day, Jan. 29.
Dr. Sternstein, who gave up
his pulpit in Dayton, 0., to as-
sume the JNF post, earned his
B.A. in Brooklyn College, re-
ceived his law degree from St.
John's University and was or-
dained Rabbi and received his
doctorate at the Jewish Theo-
logical Seminary.
His doctorate thesis, written
for Dr. Abraham Heschel, was,
in Hebrew, on the Gerer Rebbe.
He is now concluding a book
analyzing ideological relations
between Israel and world Jewry.

Eliahu Elath, president of the
Hebrew University, called for
an increase in the number of
American Jewish students at-
tending the university in Jerus-
alem.
In a statement here prior to
his return to Israel, following
a month-long visit to the United
States, Elath said that there
were about 200 Americans
among the 300 students abroad
currently attending the univer-
sity.

Israelite town dating back to
the eighth century BCE was un-
covered near Beersheba. Arch-
aeologists said that the diggers
found fragments of art figure,
sherds, cooking and eating uten-
sils, a fireplace and an oven in
the site. They said the finds
confirmed the town's crucial
importance in the area in the
time of King Uzziah.

DR. JOSEPH P. STERNSTEIN

of America, Dr. Sternstein was
for seven years national chair-
man of the ZOA commission on
education. • He holds important
national posts in the Theological
Seminary. He has held major
positions in statewide Ohio proj-
ects while in Dayton.
Author of many monographs
on Zionism, he is a contributor,
in Hebrew, English and Yiddish,
to many periodicals.
In 1956 he undertook an ex-
tensive tour of Israel and Eu-
rope, where he conferred with
leading figures of world Jewry.
In 1958, Dr. Sternstein w a s
chairman of the national ZOA
delegation to Israel and Europe
on the occasion of the 'tenth an-
niversary of the State of Israel
and the 60th anniversary of the
founding of world Zionism. He
has just returned from consulta-
tions and a survey of develop-
ments in Israel. Prior to his
ministry in Dayton, Dr. Stern-
stein was spiritual leader of
Congregation Tifereth Israel,
Glen Cove, Long Island.

zation, left for Israel for discus-
sions with government leaders
of plans for next year's Israel
bond campaign.
On his return, Dr. Schwartz
will report on his trip at a spe-
cial 1963 planning conference
of the board of governors of the
Israel Bond Organization, Jan.
12 and 13, at the Savoy-Hilton
