All three major parties, the
Conservative (or Tory) Party,
the Liberal Party and the La-
bor Party, are theoretically free
of anti-Semitism. It would be
abhorent to anyone of them to
exploit the latent dislike of
minorities for political ends.
At the same time, there are
individual anti - Semites in all
the three parties. They would
not be permitted to preach anti-
Semitism within the party, but
the party does not take action
against them. Thus: a Labor
party member would be up be-
fore the executive committee
and probably expelled after a
warning, if he was, say, a Corn-
munist or Fascist. But he would
be left alone if he was an anti-
Semite. This same goes for the
other two parties. In other
words, anti-Semitism is not an
offense against the party rules.
T h e avowed anti-Semites
are concentrated in the Brit-
ish National-Socialist Move-
ment, the League of Empire
Loyalists, the Northern Eur-
opean Ring. As to Mosley's
National Union of Fascists,
Sir Oswald Mosley himself
has stated that he no longer
has any quarrel with the Jews
as a group. However, many
of his followers are known
anti-Semites.
None of these anti-Semitic
groups has any political influ-
ence. In fact, they have no
member of Parliament between
them, nor even an Alderman
or Councillor on any of the
local authorities.
Economic anti - Semitism i s
more of a problem for British
Jews, though not a pressing one.
The Trades Advisory Council,
a Jewish body designed to fight
discrimination in trade (as well
as to guide its Jewish mem-
bers), has some figures to
offer on this score. During the
last 15 years, there were an
average of •16 recorded cases
of economic discrimination
against Jews in Britain, such
as refusal to employ Jews, or
refusal to deal with Jews. The
Arab boycott does not come
within this bracket. There are
some firms who adhere to the
rules of the boycott, but they
do so to obtain contracts; they
cannot be classified as anti-
Semites in the ordinary sense.
There is much more social
discrimination than econom-
ic. Its main area is the lower
middle class. A number of
suburban golf clubs and tennis
clubs do not accept Jews as
members, but you will find
that the most exclusive social
clubs and sports clubs do not
bar Jews.
The captain of the Royal and
Ancient, the most exalted golf
club in the world, is a Jew.
The survey is touchy about
anti-Semitism on the stage, in
films and in literature. Some
British Jews are even sensitive
about Shakespeare and Dickens.
It is generally accepted that
nothing could possibly be done
in England about Shakespeare
and Dickens, even if Shylock
and Fagin were doing harm,
which is a debatable point.
Those who tried to bowlderize
Shakespeare became figures of
fun and derision. Shakespeare
does not spare the English and
the Scots, and we too have got
to live with the Bard. The same
goes for Dickens.
All in all, the situation in
England is not as bad as it
would seem from the press re-
p o r t s of violence in public
places, court cases and deputa-
tions to members of the Gov-
ernment by Jewish leaders. In
reality these are isolated cases,
as are occasional daubings on
synagogues walls.
Nevertheless, Jews as well
as non-Jews want the Public
Order Act amended so as to
make incitement to racial and
religious hatred a punishable
offense. This also concerns Neg-
roes, Roman Catholics and oth-
er minorities — and ultimately
the nation as a whole.
