The tradition is that the indi-
vidual comes up to the Torah,
grasps the two rollers, unrolls
the parchment, looks at the
place where the reading is to
start, and then looks away and
makes the blessing, after which
he looks at the script and the
reader reads the portion fo r
him. The reason for lookin g
away during the first blessin g
is so as to prevent the illusio n
which may be evident to th e
onlookers, that he is readin g
the blessing itself from th e
Torah, since such is not th e
case.

The Midrash (Tehillim 112:2)
claims that this tradition was
e stablished by the Patriarch
braham of whom the Bible
reports that he made a great
feast for his son Isaac (Genesis
1.). The Midrash claims that
his feat was made upon the oc-
c asion of his circumcision and
goes on to say "From this the
Sages inferred that it is the
d uty of a man to. prepare a
, j oyous feast on the day that he
is privileged to circumcize his
son." From the context of the
aforementioned passage of the
Iidrash it can be gleaned that
the purpose of the feast is to
emonstrate that we observe
' the commandment of cir-
c umcision with delight. Cir-
c umcision, being a surgical op-
eration, as far as its mechanics
are concerned, would normally
be a matter of deep and grave
oncern such as any other op-
ration would be. However,
since it is a fulfilment of a
basic Jewish religious command-
ment, it is necessary to demon-
strate that we do not treat it
as surgery but as a sign of the
covenant and a privilege and
thus demonstrate our delight in
doing it and carrying out its
observance.
