Two volumes dealing with the
story of Maccabaean valor have
just been published, and both
add immeasureably to the avail-
able literature on the Hanukah
festival. .
The Macmillan Co. has pub-
lished "The Epic of the Macca-
bees" by Valerie Mindlin and
Gaalyahu Cornfeld. While it is
listed as a book for younger
readers, its historical data defi-
nitely places the book in a cate-
gory for all ages, and it has as
much value for adults as it does
for young readers.
Prayer Book Press of Hart-
ford, Conn., has published "The
Book of Maccabees," translated
by Sidney Tedesche and beauti-
fully illustrated by Jacob
Shacham.
"The Book of Maccabees" is
the text of the Maccabaean story
rendered in excellent style.
In this era of revisions of
. Bible translations, Rabbi Tedes-
che's text is especially commend-
able. It is rendered in plain
- English, understandable, lending
itself for use by scholars as well
as laymen.
An indication of the simplicity
will be found in the translator
rendition of the second chapter
which begins, as follows:
"At that time Mattathias, son
of John, son of Simeon, a priest
of the family of Joarib, moved
away from Jerusalem, and settled
in Modin. He had five sons: Jon
surnamed Gaddi, Simon called
Thassi, Judah called Maccabee,
Eleazar called Auran and Jona-
than called Apphus. When he
saw the blasphemous things that
were taking place in Judah and
Jerusalem, he said:
"Wretched am I, why was I born

to behold
The dissolution of my people and
the destruction of the holy
city,
To sit idly by while it is given
into the hands of its enemies,
The sanctuary into the hand of
foreigners?
Her people have become as a
'man without honor,
•
Her glorious treasures captured,
taken away;
Her infants 'have been killed in
her streets,
Her young men, by the sword . of
the enemy.
What nation has not shared,
And what kingdoM has not seized
her spoil?
All her adornment has been
taken away,
Instead of a free woman, she has
become a slave.
Yea, behold, our sanctuary and
our beauty,
And our glory have been laid
waste!
The heathen have profaned them.
Why then should life continue
for us?

"Mattathias and his sons tore
their clothes, put on sackcloth,
and mourned bitterly . . ."
* *
The story continues, and in
fine style is related the history
of the Maccabees, their strug-
gles, their triumphs, their de-
feats and their successes.
The complete story is related
here in the historical sequence
as told in "The Book of Macca-
bees" of which this is a trans-
lation worthy of commendation
and highly recommendable for
use in homes and in schools.

The publishers indicate that
this translation is used with the
permission of Dropsie College
and the publishing house of
Harper & Bros.

The mindlin-Cornfeld volume
similarly has great merit, but in
other directions. The Epic of
the Maccabees" contains excerpts
from the Books of the Macca-
bees but the text of the book is
a complete historical analysis of
the era that preceded the Mac-
cabees, continued through the
Maccabaean era and concludes
with the events that led to the
liberation of Judaea under the
last of the surviving Maccabees,
Simon.
This volume, too, is richly il-
lustrated with historical and
ceremonial objects. Its value lies
especially in the use of newly-
discovered archaeological data, Detroit Attorney Named Umpire
