Levinson Leads
Efforts to Bring
Dent Parley Here New Jewish Center
Last July, Ben Levinson met
with the two United States Sen-
ators and all Michigan mem-
bers of Congress to enlist their
efforts in trying to get the 1964
Democratic National Convention
in Detroit,
LeVinson also had the sup-
port of Governor John B. Swain-
son, and John M. Bailey, chair-
man, and the Democratic Na-
tional Committee was told of
the advantages of holding a
national convention in Detroit.
All members of Congress were
enthusiastic about this possibil-
ity.
Levinson met with Bailey and
other members of the National
Committee, and was told that
when a site committee was or-
ganized Detroit would definitely
be considered.
Bailey has named a site com-
mittee to meet in Washington
Jan. 17-19 to consider the De-
troit request.

Dedicated in Sweden
The new Jewish Community
Center of Goteborg, in Sweden,
is "a symbol of the rebuilding of
the Jewish community institu-
tions of Europe which were de-
stroyed during the Nazi years,"
Herbert Katzki, assistant direc-
tor-general of the Joint Distribu-
tion Committee, said last week
at the dedication ceremonies.
Although Sweden was not oc-
cupied by the Nazis, approxi-
mately half of the 1,500 Jews
now living in Goteborg are for-
mer Nazi victims who found
refuge in that city. Altogether
there are 13,000 Jews in Sweden
today about half of whom arriv-
ed in the post-war period. -
The Jewish Community Cen-
ter in Goteborg is one of the
many centers built with JDC-
Claims Conference aid - since
1955, when the first two centers
were opened in Paris and Rome.
Other centers have been opened
in Athens, Brussels, Berlin,
Lyon s, Amsterdam, Helsinki,
Barcelona and other cities
throughout Western Europe.
