Its emergence two years ago as a formal organization em- bracing seven of the larger De- troit area congregations serves to emphasize the growing num- ber of synagogues that rely on an executive director to manage the many details of congrega- tional administration The growing number of syna- gogues with executives is indica- tive of the growth in the size of congregations, since very few small congregations can afford, or have the need for a full-time executive. Realizing, however, that the problems of all synagogues are the same, whether large, small or medium - sized, the Council of Executive Directors has ar- ranged, • convened and partici- pated in several seminars for lay leaders. Such subjects have been dis- cussed as membership and mem- bership integration, leadership, the cost of synagogue affilia- tion, board responsibilities and finances. The Council also has cooper- ated with the Jewish Community Council in presenting a program on synagogue budgeting and fi- nancial planning which was at- tended by leaders of some 30 local congregations. Currently in preparation, also in cooperation with the Commu- nity Council, is the first Detroit Synagogue Directory, which will list the names of all Detroit area congregations, their loca- tions, professional staffs, num- ber of families affiliated, re- ligious school facilities, year founded, national affiliation and other pertinent information. At its recent election meeting, the Council elected Louis Haber of Adas Shalom Synagogue to serve as president during the coming year, beginning in Jan- uary. He succeeds Irving I. Katz of Temple Beth El, who was the founding president. Frank L.
