Anti-Jewish Gang
Jailed in Argentina

LA PLATA, Argentina, (JTA)
—Police arrested seven teen=
age youths and uncovered there-
by a gang blamed for a series
of anti-Semitic attacks in the
Buenos Aires area.
The young men, in their late
teens, possessed automobiles,
firearms, and ammunition. They
planned to establish a military
training camp near La Plata to
teach the arts of anti-Jewish
violence. The gang maintained
strict discipline. Punishment for
any member who failed to obey
was a dose of castor oil.

WASHINGTON, (JTA) — The
United States Agency. for Inter-
national Development will assist
in establishing a permanent eco-
nomic research project in Israel
under a credit agreement.
The credit, amounting to $500,-
000 will be made available to the
Hebrew University of Jerusalem
to assist in providing a per-
manent endowment for the uni-
versity's Falk Project of eco-
nomic research in Israel. It will
match a new grant in the same
amount, $500,000, by the Falk
Foundation of Pittsburgh, Pa.
Signatories of the agreement
signed here were William S.
Gaud, Aid Administrator for the
Near East and South Asia; Eli-
ahu Elath, president of the He-
brew University, and Philip G.
Whitman, president of the Amer-
ican Friends of the Hebrew Uni-
versity.
Directors of the Falk project
of economic research hope to
study in the next few years such
aspects of the Israeli economy
as the nature of the inflationary
process, which the aid described
as " a recurring feature in Is-
rael." Also to be studied are
the operation of government and
Histadrut corporations, the work-
ings of the government's devel-
opment budget, and the econom-
ics of the collective settlements.

The retiring chairman of the
Bnai Brith Vocational Service
Commission, Dr. Maurice
Jacobs (left) of Philadelphia,
is succeeded by Milton Berger,
an attorney, also of Philadel-
phia, who was elected at the
Commission's annual meeting
last week. Jacobs, long active
in Jewish affairs and the head
of a printing and publishing
firm that produces texts in 80
languages, has been chairman
of the Vocational Service
policy board for the past seven
years and a member since
1950. Last year, the service
program provided individual
counseling and group guidance
to 40,000 persons.

Ex-Nazi Testifies
on Killing of Jews

BONN, (JTA)—A 67 year old
former policeman in the Chelmno
concentration camp in Nazi-oc-
cupied Poland testified at the
trial of 13 former Nazis here that
it was mainly Jewish women and
children who were the victims
of the mass murder program at
the camp. The defendants are
charged with participating in the
wartime killing of 180,000 Jews
there.
Kurt Moebius of Aix La Chap-
elle, the former policeman, in-
sisted . the SS had always tried
to leave the actual killings to
the Nazi police at the camp and
th..*Alp:lihd done nothing but
obey 6i'ders. -
The prosecution entered into
the court record a secret letter
dated May 1, 1942, from the sec-
tional Gestapo leader to Gestapo
chief Heinrich Himmler, which
read: "The special treatment in
my region now is almost corn-
-pleted. More than 100,000 Jews
have been liquidated. I suggest
now that we kill 230,000 Poles
suffering from Tuberculosis."

Leftist Jewish Bodies
in Argentina Closed

BUENOS AIRES, (JTA) —
The Anti-Demoratic Division of
the Federal Police Department
closed several Jewish institu-
tions as part of a general
crackdown on leftist groups.
All the affected Jewish insti-
tutions were not affiliated with
the DAIA, the representative
body of organized Argentine
Jewry. Among the groups closed
were the IFT Yiddish Theater,
a publishing house, two cultural
centers and four schools located
in Buenos Aires.

60's Will Be Decade
of Progress in Equal
Rights, AJC Reports

Reporting that "barriers to
significant civil rights progress
in the United States are coming
down at an accelerated pace,"
the American Jewish Committee
this week said that some south-
ernstates are still "offering
strong resistance to any school
desegregation."
A. M. Sonnabend of Boston,
president of the Committee,
made this analysis on the basis
of the 14th edition of "The Peo-
ple Take the Lead" — AJC's
annual yound-up of civil rights
advanCes 'in the United States
issued in connection with Bill
of Rights Day.
Sonnabend asserted that this
year's record reveals that equal-
ity in America finds expression
"in the courtroom and the vot-
ing-booths, in schools and col-
leges, in hiring halls and rent-
ing offices, in restaurants, thea-
ters, hospitals and all other pub-
lic facilities."
The Committee president said
that while we still experience
setbacks and much remains to
be done, "it is safe to predict
that in the decade of the '60s,
America will come closer than
ever before to the democratic
ideal of equal opportunity for
all."

concluded a series of events
marking the 10th anniversary
of the death of the late Chaim
Weizmann with a public meet-
ing sponsored by the local Zion-

included special observances in

youth movements and services
in the city's synagogues.
