Detroiters who were the pio-
neer supporters of the historic
task that made possible the re-
vised translation of The Torah—
the Five Books of Moses—con-
ducted by noted Jewish scholars
under the direction of the Jewish
Publication Society of America,
will be the first to receive their
inscribed deluxe copies.

provide a fund to finance the

forts will be made\ at a break-
fast, at 10:30 Sunday morning,
Dec. 23, at the Ten Mile Road
Branch of the Jewish Communi-
ty Center, 15110 W. Ten Mile
Rd., Oak 'Park.
Invitations to the luncheon
have been issued by Judge Theo-
dore Levin, Leonard N. Simons
and Philip Slomovitz, the Detroit
members of the JPS national
board.
The official presentations of
the Bibles will be made in behalf
of the JPS by Edwin Wolf II,
chairman of the society's publi-
cations committee and former
president of the JPS, and Lesser
Zussman, the JPS executive di-
rector.
Wolf is president of the Na-
tional Foundation for Jewish
Culture. He is a trustee of the
University of Pennsylvania
Library and of the American
Jewish Historical Society and
is currently Librarian of the
Library Company of Philadel-
phia, the first library chartered
by the U.S. Congress. He was
president of the Philadelphia
Jewish Welfare Federation.
He is a well known lecturer
in bibliography, is the author
of the history of the Jewish
community of Philadelphia and
has held many important
community posts.
Zussman, a social worker for
30 years, a native of Rochester,
N.Y., received his early secular
and religious education in that
city, then came to Philadelphia
where he attended the University
of Pennsylvania, receiving the
degrees of Bachelor of Science
and Master of Social Work. In
addition, he studied for one year
at the Hebrew University in Jer-
usalem.
In the field of social work,
Zussman served as case worker,
supervisor and administrator in
family service and child welfare
agencies, was an instructor at
the University of Pennsylvania

LESSER ZUSSMAN
a Major in 1946. He accepted a
commission in the Army Reserve
and was recently transferred to
the Retired Reserve in the grade
of a Lt. Colonel. After World
War II, he worked as assistant
to the executive director of the
Philadelphia Allied Jewish Ap-
peal until early 1950, when he
began his work with the JPS.

Service Aid Goes Up
DENVER, (JTA) — The num-
ber of families requesting advice
and counseling from the Jewish
Family and Children's Service
here has more than doubled in
the last year. Dr. Alfred Neu-
mann, executive director of the
agency, reported, on the eve of
the organization's 15th annual
meeting, that the number of fam-
ilies requesting aid during the
last year has gone up by 108
per cent.
