Floating Motels Named for Israel Pioneers oe GENEVA—Eighty years after Israel's "pioneer fathers" left Russia to set up rural colonies in the Holy Land, two ships have been named to commem- orate their endeavor — "Bilu" and "Nili." "Bilu" is one of a fleet of floating motels for Israel Car Ferries—a new venutre into in- ternational tourism. The name is derived from the Hebrew in- itials "House of Israel Let Us Go!" The "Bilu" were Russian-Jew- ish intellectuals who sought a pioneer life and are today con- sidered as founders of modern Israel. The choice of name con- tinues a trend of pinpointing modern Jewish history in mod- ern Israel enterprises. "Bilu" will be followed by "Nili" which commemorates the activities of a handful of World War One secret agents who sought to make Palestine independent. "Nili" too has a Hebrew derivative. It is the Hebrew for "The Eternity of Israel Is No Lie." New Zealand Jurist Sir Michael Myers, a New Zea- land jurist, was his country's only Jewish Chief Justice. He was named to the post in 1929. Chaplain Louis Barish has compiled an interesting account of the Jewish Chaplains' story, the "century of service to God and country (1862-1962)" pub- lished by Jonathan David (131 E. 23rd, N.Y.), under the title "Rabbis in Uniform." Containing an account of the chaplains' services in times of war and peace, this book serves as an historically valuable record of activities that have won highest commendations. Containing the complete lists of rabbis who have served in the armed forces, this book in- cludes many monographs by rabbis reliving their experi- ences. In the lists of chaplains appear the names of the fol- lowing Detroiters: Rabbis Herbert S. Eskin, Benjamin H. Gorrelick, Richard C. Hertz, Jacob E. Segal, Milton Rosenbaum, Morris Adler, and a number of rabbis who hold pulpits in neighboring Michigan communities. There is a composite list of Jewish chaplains for the entire century, and the records show the places and the years during which all had served. Messages from President Kennedy and former President Eisenhower commend the book. The history of the American Jewish Military Chaplaincy was written by David Max Eich- horn. a .. Experiences of chaplains de- picted in the numerous brief essays deal with occurrences in Germany and other countries, the _religious observances in military camps, work among the sick and wounded, inter- faith relations, the soldiers' problems, the chaplain as a teacher, and other happenings relating to the religious activi- ties among the men in the armed forces.
