Jewish Guild for Blind
Gets Federal Grant for
Mental Health Project

week with "distorting the truth"
about the situation of the Jews
in the Soviet Union by publish-
ing data which gives a false pic-
ture on the condition of Soviet
Jewry.
The charge was made in a
statement by the Jewish Labor
Committee issued by Adolph
Held, its national chairman.
Held said that Soviet claims
that more than 7,500 Jews
were elected to local govern-
ment offices in the Soviet Union
"is nothing to boast about. A
closer look at the facts," he said
"shows that as of 1960 more
than 1,800,000 such deputies
were elected. The so-called
`large' numbers which the So-
viets claim comes to less than
one-half of one per cent of the
total of elected deputies."
"Then," Held continued, "the
Soviets say that although Jews
are 1.1 per cent of the popula-
tion, they rank third in the
number of students. They cite a
figure of some 420,000 Jews as
having either secondary or spe-
cialized education.

ect establishing a Mental Health
Center for Disturbed Blind

cine, and former chief psycholo-
gist at the Menninger Clinic.
Dr. Gillman is assistant clinical
professor in the Department of
Psychiatry, Albert Einstein Col-
lege of Medicine, and director
of the Guild's Psychiatric Clinic.

gavels made of olive wood from
ancient groves in the hills of
Judea above Jerusalem. The
awards will be made to the 10
congregations which led in this
year's High Holy Day Israel
Bond Appeal. The "Golden Min-

when volunteers will take part
in a cash collection drive, seek-
ing to convert Israel Bond com-
mitments into cash. BIG DAY
will be held on the same day as
the Hanukah festival—Dec. 23.
Col. Goren, who will be intro-
duced by Rabbi Isaac Stollman,

is a renowned scholar and Tal-
mudic authority. He has been
considered for the post of Chief
Rabbi of Israel. During the
Sinai Campaign he went into
Egypt with the Israeli army.

presented cabaret style and the
audience will be seated at tables.

Israel Pays Tribute
to- Pioneers of State

JERUSALEM — Nation-wide
celebrations to mark "Schnat
Rishonim," the year of the
pioneers, began here Tuesday
when an entire parliamentary
session was devoted to a tribute
to the first settlers in pre-state
Palestine.
Some 40 guests, veteran set-
tlers and descendants of the
founding pioneers attended the
session and were later received
by President Ben-Zvi at his offi-
cial residence. Prime Minister
Ben-Gurion later addressed a
mass meeting at the Jerusalem
Cultural Center, where thou-
sands joined the nation's lead-
ers in the tribute. Previously,
the 40 pioneers were given a
reception at city hall.

A new American-Israel defen-
sive relationship was asked by
National Commander Morton
London of the Jewish War Vet-
erans of the U.S.A., because Is-
rael "faces a greater menace by
Soviet jet bombers and rockets
in the hands of her Arab neigh--
hors than America does from
Cuba."
In a statement supporting
President Kennedy's strong stand
on removal of IL-28 Soviet jet
bombers from Cuba, London
stressed that the United Arab
Republic is equipped with the
far more modern and dangerous
TU-16 Soviet jet bombers.

There were 5,855,000 new
passenger cars and 917,000 new
commercial vehicles registered
in the United States in 1961.
