this story mirrors life in small
American communities. The

representative of American

American story, -well written

especially for those who are
interested in history and ge-
ography and in the ways of dif-
ferent people's lives, another
Viking book, "Cambodia: Land
of Contrasts," by Ruth Tooze,
has much merit. Illustrated
with many photographs, this
volume will have a wide appeal,
especially in view of the in-
creasing interest in the Far
East.
Young people and their
elders who love humor and
adventure will be delighted
with "The Three-Seated Space
Ship," by Louis Slobodkin,
published by Macmillan. This
charming story describes "the
latest model of the space ship
under the apple tree."
Slobodkin's established rec-
ord for outstanding humorous
narratives for young people is
in evidence in this story about
Marty and Eddie, their adven-
tures in space, their encounter
with the dinosaur, their dizzy
search for action in outer
space.
For 20 years, Slobodkin has
entertained children with his
stories. His newest supersedes
many of them in hot adventure
and genuine humor that applies
to the imagination of young
people in the modern age. "The
Three-Seated S'pace Ship" is one
of the noteworthy children's
books of the year.
From Viking Press also
comes a most delightful and
wholesome story for young
people — "Melissa" by Ida B.
Forbes, illustrated by Sue
Felt. The theme of this nar-
rative is universal. It has an
educational appeal, there is
