Lipsky was the recipient
this past weekend of numer-
ous messages of congratula-
tions from Jewish leaders in
various countries on the occa-
sion of his 86th birthday.
Leading in the messages from
Israel was a cable from Prime
Minister David Ben-Gurion.
"Your vigor and freshness of
soul are symbolic of the vitali-
ty of our people," Ben-Gurion
said in his message. "The rich-
ness of your distinguished life
as a leader, writer, thinker and
orator has had a powerful im-
pact on the formal pattern of
the largest center of Jewry in
the world. May you be blessed
with many more Years of illus-
trious and fruitful service."
A huge birthday cake was
sent to Lipsky by the Zionist
Organization of America.
Negro College Head
Speaks on Afro-Asian
Assimilation in Israel
WASHINGTON, ( JTA) — Is-
rael's role in the development
of new Afro-Asian states was
lauded by President James M.
Nabrit, Jr., of Howard Univer-
sity, a Negro institution, in an
address sponsored here by the
Jewish Community Council of
Greater Washington.
Nabrit, explaining the slow
assimilation of Afro-Asian Jews
in Israel, said that since the
European Jew, a product of
Western civilization arrived first
in Israel, he occupied a leading
status and vocational position
while Afro-Asian Jews were
generally employed as unskilled
laborers.
This problem, he said, pro-
vided propaganda ammunition
for Israel's enemies because
"when people see only dark per-
sons in inferior positions and
white persons only in higher
positions, no explanation will
really satisfy (observers) that
race is not a factor."
The university president said
that the kibbutz concept ap-
peared to him to have once been
of great importance in Israel's
development. But, he added, "I
look on the kibbutzim like we
look on our frontier practices in
America — great in their time
but of increasingly less value
now."
He depicted Israel as "a dy-
namic country, attuned to an
historic destiny, committed to a
prophetic role and certain to
succeed." Nabrit spent a month
in Israel observing the educa-
tional facilities, the integration
of minorities and similar mat-
ters.

ademic year this program is be-
ing offered for the first• time at
Washington Square College • as
an integral part of its liberal
arts curriculum. Dr. Abraham I.
Katsh, chariman of NYU's de-
partment of Hebrew culture and
education, is in charge of the
program.
Hebrew language courses given
at Washington Square College
also will meet the foreign lan-
guage requirement for a bacca-
laureate degree, Dean Buckler
said. In addition. Hebrew satis-
fies the language requirement
for admission to the college.

Conference on Cultural

on the cultural arts will be spon-
sored for the first time by the
National Jewish Welfare Board,
Dec. 9 to 11, at the Barizon-
Plaza Hotel, New York City.
Dr. William Birenbaum, dean
of the New School for Social Re-
search in New York and former
chairman of the Cultural Com-
mission of the State of Michigan,
will deliver the keynote address
on "The Cultural Arts in Our
Society" on Sunday evening. Dr.
Birenbaurn was the originator
and director of "Detroit Adven-
ture," a project of nineteen cul-
tural and educational institutions
of Detroit.
