1, 4 _ The Bi ble By RABBI MORTIMER J. COHEN Unfortunately, the Bible is most often dressed in gloomy black. This mislea0 us into be- lieving that the le is a sad, dismal book. Nothing could be further from the'ttuth. On the contrary, its pages shine with the valiant • and 'ofiimes thrill- ing deeds of daring. men and brave women. It leaches wis- dom for daily living: It sings of love and adventure.. It records great sacrifices and :noble faith. It is filled with beautiful and tender poetry. it is rich with stirring drama. It contains ma- jestic and eloquent oratory. It describes battles and campaigns of swift-moving, shrewd military leaders: It recounts how the Jews conquered a land for them- selves, built a glorious kingdom there,_ and played their role in the international world of that age. Across its pages those in- spired men—the Hebrew proph- ets — whose words still ring through the centuries, proclaim- ing that God wants men to live righteously and act justly. - The Bible also exposes all the evil deeds men do that make life dark and sad with pain and sorrow. It does not hide the sins of the great. It does not excuse the mistakes of IsraeL It re- cords everything. The Bible is the story of a living, exciting world, teeming with life and struggle; good and evil, defeat and triumph. This story. the Bible tells with all its varied lights and shadows. Truly, it should be bound in the golden colors of the sun. Talmudic Tractate A tractate of the Talmud is called a "Masseket" or "Mas- sekta." It is believed that this terra comes from a root meaning "to weave" and that the expression originally referred to the web or the woof of the loom. From this source the expression came to signify a structure and then a composite literary construc- tion such as a tractate of the Talmud. Some commentaries draw a moral inference from this expression, by claiming that just as the passage back and forth of the loom makes the fabric ever stronger and better constructed, so does our going, back and forth over the Tal- mudic tractate make our knowl- edge and our faith ever stronger and surer. It is interesting to note that the English word "text," coming from the Latin "textus" also had this same original meaning which stem- med from a weaving operation. Want ads get quick results! DOM Y.
