A long-established tradition
for support by Detroiters of the
City of Hope, at Duarte, Calif.,
continued here on Sunday,
when the more than 300 people
who attended the annual dinner
of the City of Hope Detroit
Business Men's Group at the
Sheraton Cadillac Hotel con-
tributed close to $70,000 to-
wards the national medical
center.
The Detroiters' gifts were
given after hearing an im-
passioned appeal for the insti-
tution by Joey Adams, well
known stage-radio-TV star, and
Ben Horowitz, the City of
Hope's executive director.
In his address in which he
evaluated the medical center's
accomplishments, Horowitz de-
scribed the City of Hope as
being both a hospital and re-
search center that possesses a
humanitarian ideology.
Horowitz spoke of the cen-
ter as being a pilot medical
institution that has pioneered
in introducing many new
medical technological dis-
coveries that have influenced
medicine. He spoke of the
new techniques undertaken
at the City of Hope and the
acclaim they have won from
doctors, medical institutions
and the U. S. Government—
the Iatter's in the form of
grants to enable the continua-
tion of the center's activities.
