Addressing some 800 people at the Israel Bond dinner, in Cobo Hall, Eban inspired sub- scriptions for Israel Bonds totalling $217,350. In the audience to hear his eloquent address were state and city officials, presidents of uni- versities, Federal and County judges, labor. leaders and men and women in all walks of life, -many non-Jews gracing the double-decked dais. try for the changed attitude in providing anti-aircraft missiles for Israel's defense. "This," he said, "is an important develop- ment in Israel - U.S. relations. Never have Israel's security and freedom stood higher in the consideration of your nation's leaders." He told of a meeting he had in Washington last week with leading members of the White House staff during a visit in Washington, and called the session highly successful. • (While in Washington, Eban met President Kennedy's politi- cal advisers George McBundy, Walt Rostow, and Arthur Schlesinger; _ scientific adviser Jerome B. Wiesner and cultural adviser August Hecksher. He was also the guest of honor at a dinner tendered by Israel Ambassador Avraham Harman, attended by Chief Justice Earl Warren of the U. S. Supreme Court; Justice Arthur Goldberg; the Ambassadors of France and Sweden; the Secretary of Health, Education and Welfare, Anthony Celebrezze; Myer Feld- man, Deputy Counsel to Presi- dent Kennedy; Ambassador Eric Johnston, Assistant Secretaries of State Harlan Cleveland, Philips Talbot, and others.) The list of Bond purchasers was headed by a subscription of $25,000 by Max M. Fisher, president of the Jewish Wel- fare Federation, who pre- sided. There was a $15,000 purchase by Mrs. Morris Schaver and several $10,000 purchases. Pointing out that Israel is no longer the youngest among the nations-51 new nations have been admitted to • the United Nations since Israel became, in 1949, the 59th UN member nation—Eban spoke about "the unforgettable years during which we saw visions together and dreamt great dreams," and expressed his conviction that even in the present "prosaic normality" the "coming years, too, can be heroic." He analyzed the position of the small nations, declared that "they do not have a negligible role," that "they can play a conciliatory role in the con- flicts of our time," and empha- sized Israel's activities in con- cert with the Afro-Asian na- tions. He said that 1,600 from the latter countries are now studying in Israel and that 1,400 Israeli experts are en- gaged in assisting new nations in Africa and Asia in their scientific developments. "The tendency of the small nations is to regard Israel as their laboratory, as their pilot plant," Eban said. "Our little nation has an important role to play in giving reality to the lives of small nations." Israel's former Ambassador to the U. S. took occasion to express gratitude to this coun- Sisterhood of Cong. Recalling the inauguration of the Israel Bond Drives in 1951, Eban appealed for uninterrupt- ed support of the Israel invest- ment projects, stating that "we have now come to solve once and for all the survival of a people. You have planted a tree. May it flourish and grow and may its branches reach unto Heaven." Samuel Rothberg, national Israel Bond campaign chair- man and a national UJA lead- er, in a brief appeal, recalled that he was here with Ben- Gurion to inaugurate the Israel Bond drive in 1951. He said that the redemption of the first Israel Bond issue next April and the repayment by Israel, next Feb. 1, of the $100,000,000 loan from the Export Bank, will mark his- toric dates. Rotheberg conducted the ap- peal for Bond sales, receiving many hearty responses. Fisher, in his introductory remarks, emphasized that Israel Bonds and the UJA "comple ment each other," and that the Jewish W e l f a r e Federation recognizes the importance of investments as supplementary Linda Cohen to Wed Peter Friedman "The real competition lies in the laboratories and the libraries of our universities," Eban said. "Our economy de- pends on systematized knowl- edge." He described the school sys- tem in Israel, the conflict be- tween "two nations" in the land —those who have been in- fluenced, by European culture and the other half that comes from downcast and backward Islamic countries—and appealed for continuing help to provide the Israel Bond office, 8522 W. While emphasizing Israel's gains in friendships on four continents, Eban neverthe- less warned of the dangers that • face his country, of the "Nasserist expansion" moves. He declared that "tension still is the normality of Israel's life," that while "Israel out- ward life is tranquil, there still are eddies underneath." "There are still expansionist forces at work in our region," he declared. "Events in Yemen cause concern in Israel chiefly because of the factor of ex- ternal interference. It becomes plain that Nasserism is not yet content with a legitimate Egyp- tian destiny. Its ambition reaches out to other sovereign countries in a purposeful bid for hegenomy and domination. If these influences were to triumph in places closer to Is- rael, our region would be a focus of grave crisis once again." Emphasizing that Israel is "a beleaguered country," surround- ed by enemies 50 times its size, Eban indicated that in 20 years, when Israel's population is ex- pected to number four million, the number of Arabs will in- crease froin 90,000 to 200,000, and Israel's problems, he im- plied, will grow. Eban also pointed out that the Arabs have begun to adopt new methods of inculcating cultural, scientific and technical skills among their people; that Israel's current cultural superi- ority is not guaranteed; that there are ominous signs on the horizon. to philanthropy in tasks to aid Israel. Rabbi Jacob E. Segal intro- duced Eban. The invocation and benediction were given by Rabbis Milton Arm and Irwin Groner. Tom Borman, Detroit Bond chairman, welcomed the gathering and Irwin Cohn pre sented Eban with a folio con- taining the names of the Bond purchasers at the Monday night dinner. Mrs. Joseph Katchke spoke in behalf of the Israel Bond Women's Division. Michigan's Secretary of State James M. Hare brought greet- ings from Governor John B. Swainson, and Fisher announced that he was delegated by Governor-Elect George Romney to greet the gathering. Richard Strichartz, representing Mayor Cavanagh, brought a warm mes- sage of greeting from him. The Mayor's letter stressed "the moral and economic ties of friendship that link our two nations." . Mr. and Mrs. Charles Gros- berg were hosts• at a reception in Eban's honor preceding the dinner. Dr. Slawson Charges Fascism Is Avoided in School Instruction Dr. John Slawson, executive vice president of the American Jewish Committee, said that widespread "gaps" and "distor- tions" exist in courses on totali- tarianism in American high high schools, and that the subject of fakism is, in most instances, "avoided" or "treated solely as an 'evil force' with very little effort made to explain its sources, methods and purposes." He pointed out that in America today there is a "semantic blurr- ing of political ideologies which helps to confuse current issues." For example, "there is great con- fusion as to the stand of the `true conservative' the 'pseudo- conservative', the 'true liberal' and the `pseudo-liberal'." The term "Marxism", he said, is used "to designate the Social Democrats of Western Europe with whom we get along ami- cably as well as the Chinese Communists who believe war with the U.S. is inevitable." Even the word "democracy" has lost the precise meaning it once had, Dr. Slawson stated. UN 2-0200 UN 3-8532 Ask about Living Color We are happy to show samples on request.
