education and his Ph. D. at Co-
lumbia University.
A teacher in New York
schools for many years, Dr.
Gamoran was on the faculty
of Teachers College of the
Jewish Theological Seminary
before being called to his
post with the Union of Amer-
ican Hebrew Congregations.
Taking a deep interest in all
Hebrew educational movements,
Dr. Gamoran was among the
leaders in Histadrut Ivrith and
was active in the National
Council for Jewish Education.
He was the author of many text-
books and edited scores of
books for adults and children
which were published by the
UAHC. His textbooks are wide-
ly used in many schools today.
Together with the late A. H.
Friedland, he was the co-author
of a series of books entitled,
"Gilenu—the Play Way to He-
brew," which revolutionized ac-
tivities for the advancement of
the study of Hebrew by Jewish
youth.
He was awarded a number of
honorary degrees, served on na-
tional boards of several import-
ant movements and was a lec-
turer at the Hebrew University
in Jerusalem.
