Romney Affirms
His Belief in
`Separation'

An inquiry made by Jules
D'Oneson of the George Rom-
neys regarding purported ru-
mors that they were -opposed to
the U. S. Supreme Court de-
cision outlawing the reading of
prayers in public schools
brought the following • state-
ment from Governor - Elect
George Romney:
"Thank you for your recent
letter relating to my position
on recitation of prayers in pub-
lic schools.
"I have made my position
clear in the past, and it is es-
sentially this. I have never
argued with the Supreme Court
decision in the New York case.
I would not be in favor of any
attempt in Michigan to inter-
fere with the decision.
"I understand you have al-
ready talked with .Mrs. Romney
and I trust she has set to rest
any suspicions you might have
about her remarks, which have
been distorted for obvious po-
litical reasons."
In an appended • note to his
letter initialed G. R., the Gover-
nor-Elect stated: •

believe in separation of
Church. and State." •

Romney's letter was post-
marked 'Nov. 1. • Doneson had
communicated with him on Oct:
4, inquiring as to the veracity
of reports that Mr. and . Mrs.
Romney favOred prayers as
part of school curricula. On
Oct. 8, Mrs. Lenore - Romney
herself called Doneson to re-
fute the rumors and to tell him
that her husband was a disci-
plined American citizen who ac-
cepts • "the law of the land as
such:"
She stated that both she and
her husband were in agreement
with the Supreme Court de-
cision and were opposed to any
type of, interference with it.
She assured Doneson that her
husband, then a candidate for
the GOverriorship, would per-
sonally.assert his position. His
position-0i Nov. 1 was a follow-
Ilk tothat conversation.
