Swis.s Jewry Shows -Deep. Interest in Israel-Sponsored Bible Quizzes

ZURICH, Switzerland—Chaim
Gevaryahu, the inspired Jerusa-
lemite thanks to whose ingenu-
ity the Bible quizes. which have
attracted worldwide attention,
were instituted in Israel, has
taken Swiss communities by
storm.
He has addressed gatherings
in Zurich, Basle, Geneva, and
other communities in Switzer-
land. and everywhere he con-
tinues to -receive hearty re-
sponses to his pleadings that
Jews everywhere should turn to
the Bible and should form
Tanakh—Torah, Nebiim, Ketu-
bim—study groups.
Guiding him in his efforts,
in addition to the rabbis and a
number of Swiss Jewish lead-
ers, is Hermann Wohlmann, a
layman who refuses to assume
an official post but who de-
. votedly assists in every activi-
' ties in behalf of Hebraic stud-
ies, for Israel and Zionism, for
the advancement of Jewish
spiritual-cultural projects.
Wohlmann, who is a stu-
dent of world Jewish affairs,
who reads many .American
Jewish newspapers, believes
that Swiss Jewry, including
the youth, are more thorough-
ly steeped in Jewish learning
and are better prepared for
activity in behalf of Israel.
As proof for his contention,
Wohlmann points out that 200
young Swiss Jews — the total
Jewish population of Switzer-
land numbers' 18,000 — have
been educated in Israel in the
last few years and additional
groups are being sent there for
that purpose.
Pointing also to the $400,000
gift by the small Swiss Jewish
community to the Keren Haye-
sod, Wohlmann contends that
while it is, ratio-wise. a bit
smaller than the U.S. gift to the
