Community Council Recommends Aaron-Richman
Guide Lines for School Prayer Issue Troth A71/10unced

Religious practices in public
schools in Detroit and the sur-
rounding areas and local Jewish
community policy in respect to
school religious practices were
reviewed by the community re-
lations committee of the Jewish
Community Council.
Louis Rosenzweig, chairman
of the committee, stated that
a continuing re-appraisal of the
problem is called for and noted

that it is particaularly timely in
view of the recent Supreme
Court (Engel-Vitale) decision,
and the problems that arise
each year at this time in con-
nection with Christmas-Hanukah
observances in the schools.
Zeldon Cohen, co-chairman of
the committee, presided at the
meeting. Participating in a
panel discussion were Dr. Nor-
man Drachler, Mrs. Harvey
Lewis, Mrs. Morris Brown and
Max Miller. The comments of
the panelists related to the ex-
isting practices in Detroit and
suburban school systems, the
latter in Bloomfield H i 1 1 s,
Southfield and Birmingham.
The views of the panelists
were that generally Jewish chil-
dren attending public schools
in these areas are not exposed
to blatantly sectarian programs.
Where such have occurred, the
school authorities have been
sensitive to the problems cre-
ated. This is notably true in
the suburban areas where in
many schools the attendance of
Jewish children is a recent de-
velopment.
Frank Rosenbaum analyzed
the recent Court decision and
discussed the cases now pending
before the Supreme Court.
These relate to Bible reading,
recitation of the Lord's Prayer
and religious holiday observ-
ances in the schools. A sum-
mary of experiences in other
cities was presented by Leonard
Gordon, Council staff associate.
The committee recommended
the preparation of a set of
"guide lines" in the latter con-
nection. Such "guide lines"
would deal with methods of
meeting particular problems and
would project a program for
spreading information within
the Jewish community.
