S. African Jews Vow Allegiance to Nation
in Face of Israel's UN Vote on Apartheid

JOHANNESBURG, (JTA) —
Appreciation for the under-
standing shown by Premier
Hendrik Verwoerd for the prob-
lems of South African Jewry,
arising from Israel's United Na-
tions vote against South Africa's
apartheid policy, was expressed
in a joint statement of the. South
African Jewish Board of Depu-
ties and the Zionist Federation.

Delay in Belgium's
Efforts to Extradite
Former SS General

(Direct JTA Teletype Wire
to The Jewish News)

BRUSSELS—The Belgian
parliament was told Wednesday
that the delay in the extradi-
tion to Belgium of Robert Jan
Verbelen, former SS general
from Austria, had been caused
by Verbelen's fight to retain
his recently acquired Austrian
nationality.
Verbelen, a one-time deputy
to Belgian Fascist Leon De-
greble, is wanted in Belgium
on Nazi war crimes charges.
Paul Henri Spaak, Belgian
Vice-Premier and Foreign Min-
ister, disclosed the delay in
reply to a question. He said
that Verbelen had been de-
prived of the Austrian nation-
ality he acquired under false
pretenses a few years ago but
that the Nazi had appealed the
action and his extradition had
been postponed pending a final
decision on his nationality.

3 Chelmno Survivors
to Testify on Fate
of 170,000 Victims

Chelmno, near Lodz in Poland,
was one of the six largest death
camps operated by the Nazis. All
that remains of the 170,000 Jews
herded into its hideous confines
are three men, all of them living
in Israel. Their whereabouts
came to light as the result of a
global search in which the World
Jewish Congress participated at
the request of West Germany.
The three men, Michael Pod-
chlebnik, Simon Srebrnik and
Mardka Zurawski, will be on
hand in Bonne to give evidence
in the trial of 13 Nazis accused
of crimes committed during the
Nazi period against the Jews in
Chelmno. Beginning Monday,
the trial is the first of a series
concerning such camps.
The indictment, comprising
200 pages, describes not only the
accused and the crimes for which
they are indicted, but goes into
grim detail of the Nazi methods
of treating and gassing the hap-
less thousands of Jews trans-
ported to Chelmno between 1941
and 1944.

Israel Supreme Court
Opens Hearing on
Appeal by Dr. Beer

(Direct JTA Teletype Wire
to The Jewish News)

JERUSALEM—The Israel Su-
preme Court opened Tuesday a
hearing on the appeal by Dr.
Israel Beer from a 10-year pris-
on term on conviction of espion-
age last January.
The prosecution at the same
time began an appeal against
the sentence as too lenient.
The three-man tribunal, with
Chief Justice Yitzhak Olshan
presiding, met behind closed
doors. Only its judgment on the
appeals will be made public.
Before entering the courtroom,
Beer, a former member of the
Israel Army general staff, told
newsmen he was innocent. He
said he had never spied for or
sent military secrets to any
power, the counts on which he
was convicted.

Study Club Meets Sunday

The Junior Students Group
of Music Study Club of Detroit
will meet Sunday, 2 p.m., at the
home of Mrs. Morris W. Stein,
26080 Salem, Huntington Woods.

The statement reaffirmed the
sole political allegiance of
South African Jews to South
Africa, and explained the na-
ture of the ties between the
Jewish community and Israel.
The statement stressed that
"love of the Holy Land is in-
herent in thd very conception
of the Jewish religion."
It declared that the Jew "sees
in the revival of Israel, and in
the ingathering of exiles, the
fulfillment of biblical prophe-
cies in which it is a sacred duty
to participate." The South Af-
rican governments and people
have always understood and
sympathized with this ideal, the
statement added.
Noting that funds collect-
ed by South African Zionists
provide relief and resettle-
ment for Jewish refugees, the
statement declared that, be-
cause of their conception of
the "sacredness of this duty,"
South African Jews "fervent.
ly desire that their associa-
tion with this work of Jewish
redemption and rehabilitation
should continue."
Earlier, regret for Israel's
support of the United Nations
vote for sanctions against South
Africa was expressed by Dr.
Teddy Schneider, chairman of
the South African Board of
Jewish Deputies. He spoke soon
after Verwoerd denounced the
Israeli vote. The Premier had
warned that South African Jew-
ry might be the hardest hit by
sanctions.
Schneider, speaking at a
meeting of the Pretoria Jewish
Community Council, said: "We
are aware of Israel's special
difficulties and serious prob-
lems, yet we cannot but regret
its overall vote for sanctions.
We all in the past rejoiced at
the friendly relations which
existed between' our country
and Israel. Israel too acknowl-
edged the considerable help
received from our country."
Emphasizing that South
African Jews had no political
allegiance other than to
South Africa, and had no say
in nor could be held account-
able for Israel's policies, the

Jewish leader added: "These
developments are very painful
to every Jew who loves South
Africa and who also cherishes
and hopes to continue his as-

It is our profound prayer that
the present difficulties will
